Homer Norton POST - - - OREGON San Diego, Calif., March It, Itli The Editor, Crook County Journal Prluevillo, Oregon. IHar Sir:- Encloaed D lease find some din pitiKS from the local newsoaoera ila cribing the recent score of the Vult- ed State Destroyer Stoddard, held off the southern drill grounda in the Short Range Target Practice. Wa hare the highest score of the dm. troyers to date, averaging one nun dred and thirty-one percent. My battle station is on the fire con trol bridge. I have charge of the range keeper. There are five meu in all on the fire control, we have the control of the fire of the guns It is our duty to get the ranges and the deflection of the target aud transmit it down to the gun crews It is sent down by voice tube, and the electrical transmitting system So you see the guns cannot make a hit unless we get the correct range and deflection of the target. If we make a mistake in the initial range. we have a "spotter" in the crow's nest. He has a powerful pair of binoculars which show the target iu minute detail, he spots the shells. and if we make a miss, sends the spot down to me, I apply the spot to the range keeper, and have the cor rection sent down to the guns crews. all which must be done in the least possible time, as time counts in tar get practice, as well as in actual hits. We have Just returned from the long cruise In southern waters, vis iting the Panama Canal, Panama, and Chili on our cruise. We expect to make the long cruise around the world in August with the fleet, if the present plans go through. We now have the Navy "E" for gunnery, and expect to make the rod Navy "E" for engineering this fiscal year, as we are already ahead of the reBt of the destroyers in engineering performances. I am sending you these cliDDlne to let my home town know that the good ship Stoddert is still on the map, that we have the best "skinner' in the Navy; our commanding offi cer is Commander J. N. Ferguson, U. S. N., and we are all pulling to gether to make this ship the best in me u. H. Navy. ; Sincerely yours, J. W. Putnam, Ch. Stkr, V. S. N. The clipping referred to follows: What is said to be an Amerinnn and probably world record was es tablished by the anti-aircraft gun crew of the destroyer Stoddert on tne drill grounds of this oort whnn eight shots fired in less than one minute all scored hits. It was a three-inch gun, solid shells and not shrapnel were used and the destroy er was traveling 15 knots while the target was towed at five knots speed In the opposite direction. The dis tance was 1100 yards. The navy "E" for excellence in gunnery was won for the ship and the crew wins $20 each in gold. The two gunpointers who actually made the record were A. J. Beahm and J. Strong, enginmen, first class. Oth ers of the crew are C. H. Bowen, en- ginman second class; J. E. Newton, water tender; W. Patterson, fi reman second class; R. W. McArthur, gun ner's mate second class: J. J. Flor entine, fireman second class. This anti-craft gun record of ac curacy and speed in firing is regard ed in naval circles as having great bearing on the controversy in thn navies of this country and others re garding the alleged nelDlessnRSH of the floating vessels under aerial at tack. It would appear the bomb ing planes would have considerable difficulty on their part with such ac curacy by anti-aircraft guns on the ships. Not only the anti-aircraft eim crew of the Stoddart, but the 4-inch gun crew as well earned an "E" in the target practice, scoring 80 ner cent, and also winning nrize mnnnv. Members of the 4-inch eun crew and the fire control party of the Stoddart are: J. w. Putnam, chief storekeep er; C. H. Odgen, chief QuartermaHt er; J. H. Steger, quartermaster 1st class; L. G. Berg, quartermaster lt class; A. C. Prout, quartermaster 1st class; F. A. Rosenquist, quarter master 2nd class; J. M. Ward, en gineman 1st class; L. Reiser, eneine. man first class;, H. E. Karsten, cox swain; J. McShane, electrician thinl class; F. P. Kiley, gunner's mate third class, and H. H. Tate, A. W. Mickelson, C. W. Hyten. H. C. Jor. dan, W. Laddish, A. L. Bigble, R.
