Major - General Hun ter Liggett, commanding, the first American army corps, la in active charge of that corps on the center of the allied drive in the Alsne-Marne salient, General March, chief of staff, told newspaper correspondents at the semi-weekly conference at the war de partment The American divisions forming this corps are serving contiguously on this sector, the control of which is In the bands of Major General Liggett aa commander of the first major American unit to get Into action In France. General Pershing, aa a reault of re cent transfers of American divisions which had been brigaded with tbe British, now has 1,000,000 men under his direct command, tbe chief of staff stated. The number of American divisions actively engaged on this sector baa been Increased to eight, now Includ ing tbe 1st id, 3d and 4th regulars and the 26th, 28th, 82d and 42d na tional guard. General March an nounced that It waa the 42d division which met and defeated the Prussian guarda during tbe preaent week. Total . embarkation , of American troops during July broke all records. It was announced officially, more than 200,000 men having been shipped. The grand total embarked to the end of July haa passed the 1,300,000 mark. The previous high monthly record waa for June when 276,000 men were sent overseas. U. S. WAR LOSS OVER 15,000 Sunday Casualty List is Longest Yet Received. Washington. Army and marine corps casualties reported from over seas i during the week ending Sunday increased 1430, compared with 1050 the week before. Total casualties re ported are 15,196, including Sunday's army list of 288 the largest number yet reported In a single day and ma rine corps list of two. While, as yet no figures on casual ties In the great allied offensive In which American troops are playing such a conspicuous part, the Increase In the dally army lists undoubtedly la due In part tq this fighting.
