T11IS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGH ADVERTISING BY THE GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES THE FARMER WINS A large number of consumers in Portland, following the lead of other large cities, have declared a boycott on various of the highest priced commodities, especially eggs and are recommending that a com mission for the investigation of the costs be appointed by the govern ment and that the farmer be ques tioned about the high price he is charging for his products. This is all well and good, until they come to the farmer's investi gation, and that is just a step too far. The prices are high, very high, and the middleman who stores millions of eggs when they are cheap and sells them later at a nickle apiece, should be legislated off the earth, not because he is making several hundred percent profit on the investment, but be cause he sells these eggs as a fresh article when they are not, thus in a manner obtaining money under false pretense. He is entitled to a good profit on his business, but should be compelled to sell every egg with the date of its origin stamped plainly thereon. But to get back to the producer. The farmer and livestock raiser is this year for the first time, prac tically in control of the situation. He has a good supply of the things that are absolutely neces sary to the nations of the earth and he has at last realized the fact that he, and not the middleman, is really in a position to control the markets of the world, and thus win for himself his share of the profits that are annually made on these products. All of this, however, is beside the real issue. Prices are high and the boycott is' on which will pinch the middleman and not the producer. Our advice would be, let the in vestigation proceed and sit tight. If any change is made, the farmer should advance the price on his products. They are limited and largely non-perishable. Opportunities of this nature are scarce enough for the producer and when they come they should not be overlooked. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION. Department of the Interior, U. S. Land Office at The Dalles.
