The Oregon Voter, which has un dertaken for itself the task of cor recting many of the evils political in this state, and which has ac tually accomplished some good things, has an editorial in its last issue under the caption "Freckled Politics," in which our newly elect ed representative is accused of be ing an honest man and a number of other things, equally' interest ing, are mentioned. We do not wish to go on record concerning Mr. Burdick's reputation for truth and veracity, although we could but agree with the Voter if we should, but will give you the article from the able pen of Bro. Chapman instead. It follows: "If anyone asks you about the political complexion of the next Oregon legislature you can describe it as freckled. Our direct primary system is responsible for a party puzzle that beats the old game of "Pigs in clover." Of the 90 members, only 44 re present one party each, fhey in clude 36 republicans and 8 demo crats. Then, there are two inde pendents. Of the remaining 44 there are 32 who ride two party horses, 11 who straddle arcoss three, and one political-hippo-colossus who performs the amazing feat of bestriding four prancing nags at one and the same time. For, be it known, he accept ed the nominations of the Repirbli can, Democratic, Progressive and Prohibition parties for the same j office. Our -hero is none other than Denton G..tJurdick, who represents the five broad-minded and broad acred , . counties of Crook, Grant, Jefferson, Klamath and Lake, prob ably thav largest state representa tive district in the world, as it comprises 26,718 square miles, be ing nearly as big as the State of Pennsylvania. The funny part of it is that Mr. Burdick is an honest man, who did not have to strain his deep convictions a particle to accept nominations of all four parties un der the .stated requiramenti of our wonderful nominating system in vented in Oregon. But to give a composite picture of our feckled legislature. In the Senate, there are twelve straight Republicans, five straight Demo crats (in Oregon, Democrats are always straight), two unterrified Independents, ten "Republican-Progressives," and two "Republican-Democratic-Progressives," what ever that kind of an animal is, if any. Our House of Representatives contains 24 straight Republicans; three straight Democrats, one-third of which is feminine, being that delightful and cultured Southern lady, Mrs. Alexander Thompson, of The Dalles; one modest Independ ent, one "Progressive-Prohibitionist," 21 "Republican-Progressives," three "Republican-Progressive-Pro-hibitionists," six "Republican-Democratic-Progressives" and then the wonderful, marvelous, unpre cedented attraction, never before exhibited alive or dead, the double- Siamese triple-hyphenated "Repub lican - Democratic Progressive-Pro hibitionist." Tne big show opens at Salem, Monday, January 8 ; remains open for the forty days for which the . pei formers are sure of their pay, and will close only after some of the freckles are rubbed out or re placed by spots.
