PERMANENT DESTRUCTION OF ANTWERP IMPOSSIBLE. Often Bombarded, but Always Quick ly Rebuilt Due to Port Facilities. Antwerp repeatedly has been bom barded and otherwise baa suffered from tho ravages, of war, but each time bag tnnmiged through the wonder ful com is: ert in I udi outages of Its posi tion to build Itself up again and to re sume Its place us oue of tile great porta of the world. Oue of tbo first things history con tains about Antwerp Is its destruction by the Northmen In 830. It was rebuilt and developed Its wealth until late In the fifteenth century the trado of Bruges whs transferred to It by the German King Maximilian. Tbe protection of Emperor Charles V. enabled Antwerp to become per haps the wealth Inst city on tbe contl i oent, surpassing even Venice. Thousands of the Industrious and thrifty citizens of Antwerp were ban ished and sought refugo in England under the persecutions of the Duke of Alva In the latter part of the sixteenth century, and In 1570 the Spanish sol diers massacred 0.000 citizens, pillaged the town and burned down the central part of It. Eight hundred buildings were destroyed and $10,000,000 dam age to property was done. Nino years later tho city was captur ed by Duke Alexander of Parma after a fourteen months' siege, In which It suffered severely. The city then lost much of Its trade to the Dutch, and the peace of Westphalia completed the destruction of the city's cflmmerce. With the collapse of tho supremacy of Austria, Antwerp took on a new lease of life. Napoleon I. hclppd the city by constructing 8 harbor and new quays.. In 1814 tho city's troubles be- hkmiu. u ua ucieinleu ugutust the H I lies fur a time, but flnnlly was surrendered to the British. The city did not recover from these calamities to any great extent until 1803, whoa the right of levying dues on the Scheldt was bought from Dob land. FOOD HINTS FOR PUPILS. Flank steak costs much less than top sirloin or round steak, but It makes an excellent roast It can also be pot roasted or used as chopped tnenL Chuck or round steak costs much less than porterhouse or sirloin and can be broiled In the same manner. Chuck roast costs much less than rib roust and will make just as appetizing a dish If the Imue is removed, the meat rolled and then rousted. The beef neck Is Juicy and well fla vored. It rarely sells for over 18 cents a pound and makes a good pot roast and excellent stews and soups. Shin of beef makes a good "beef a la mode." Cut It up the same as for stew, brown the pieces In hot fnt; then add water, cook In a pot tbe same as pot roast and serve with tbe gravy. Shin of beef makes a most nourish ing soup, and the meat can be taken from the pot afterward and served with horseradish sauce. If you buy a rib roast of beef have your butcher cut the rib end off so that you can use It for making soup.
