Those apples, Uraventeins, had just been picked from the tree. They sell for $1.75 box in I'rine ville. That is the price the grower gets, less the value of his time and that of bis horses spent in hauling , the fruit the 25 miles to the county seat. It takes an apple tree eight to 12 years to come into bearing. J.W.Collins returned Ihe first of the week from Stockton, Cal., where he has U-en buying machin ery for the steam freighting outfit that will lie used to haul grain from Madras to the railroad. Mr. Col lins fays the machinery will be on the ground in about ten days and will be put into ojs rntion immedi ately. The train will content of a 70-horce power engine, a water lank and six trucks. Thus far the wedding day of Mis Margaret Morrison and Mr. Thomas Sharp, Jr., has not been definitely decided upon, but in all probabilities will occur the last of September or the first of October, says the Oregonian. Four attrac tive and extremely popular girls, Miss Margaret Walter, Miss Let-lie Knapp, Miss Carolyn Rums and Miss Lisa Wood, will bo brides maids. Miss Dorthy Morrison with her beautiful coloring and hand some features, is to be the maid of honor. The ushers, have not yet been chosen. Right now is the time to save up choice samples of grain for exhibit at the third annual Crook County Fair which will be held at Prine ville October 15 to 19. J. F. Rlanchard of Madras is the new principal of the I'rineville public school. Inree ol the old teachers have been re-engaged Miss Anderson, Miss Ferguson and Miss Ada Morse. Two new teach ers have been secured from outside jKiintc. School will commence Septemlier 16. F. A. Rice and family of Pot latch, Idaho, are new arrivals in city of I'rineville. It begins to look as though Cen tral Oregon would soon get tome definite railroad news. We have had the Krutschnitt party, the Trunk Line promoter and now we have something tangible in the shape of surveyors for the Corvallis & Eastern. Some twenty men have passed through I'rineville this week headed for Bisters from which place they will work to the top of the mountain on the prooed exten sion of the C. & E. The foreman of the party was accompanied by his wife who will stay at Bisters. The survey will be taken up at the point it was dropped few years ago on the summit of the Cascades. Iieyond the summit the greater part of the right-of-way has been graded and a mile of complete track lies in the pass between Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood. Lee Caldwell of Rosland was on our streets today. Mrs. II. J. Healey of Haystack was in town yesterday. Mrs. M. T. Cowan and daughter of Lamonta were in town shopping yesterday. M. R. Elliott and family have gone to Newport to spend their vacation. Carey Foster and family have gone to the mountains for their annual outing. James A.
