Crook County Journal THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 1907. Subscription f l.SO a JMt. D. F. Powell Dead. Pied, fct his home in Prineville, Monday, April 8, 1907, D. F. Powell, aged 78. Another name has been stricken from our ever lessening roll of old nettlers. "Uncle Dsn," as he was familiarly called, came to Crook county thirtv-three years ago and has lived her ever since. He was a member of the Baptist church, a man of generous iuipulnes and never forgot the hospitable ways of th pioneer. He had a kindly word for everybody and in his own quiet way rounded out a ripe old age. He was married to Miss Jane Cary of Linn county in 1863, who survives him. Five children were born to them. The four living are Mrs. Minta Prine of Lewiston, Ida ho; Mrs. Elva Allen of Eugene; Farmer and Archie Powell of this citv. He was buried in the Union cemetery Tuesday and was follow ed to his last resting place by a large number of friends. Redmond Items. Redmond, Ore., April 8, 1907. M. E. Landes visited the county capital Friday, got caught in the rain and returned Sunday. The undersigned did a similar trick at Madras. Q. V. Moore of Prineville, was looking after farming interests in this section last week. Neighbor Young has sold a forty of his land which he has been holding and realized quite well op on it More land buyers in every day, Stage line business is rushing. Stage was late Sunday owing to poor connections at exterior points. We had an elegant rain and small grain is booming in conse quence. A Ladies Aid has been organized in connection with the Sunday School. The purpose is to help purchase an organ. E. C. Park, nting of his impressions of dry farming Prof. H. T. French of the Idaho State University, says that one thing that impressed him most was the amount of testimony given of the successes attained in farming in the semi-arid conditions without the aid of irrigation. In Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Ne braska, The Dakotas, Utah, Ari zona, New Mexico, Idaho and Cali fornia thousands of acres of hither to range lands have lieen convert ed into productive, cultivated areas bearing from twenty to forty bush els of wheat per acre, and even greater yields of oats and barley were reported. There are thou sands of acres in Crook county awaiting the touch of of scientific farming and the day is not far dis tant when tf idle land will be dotted with homes, churches and school houses. Already a start has been made with every promise of success. Hujk School Gold Medals Here.!
