SWIMS JOHN DAY FOR $1,511 Indian Braves Swift Waters of the Stream to keep the Mail Box From Being Destroyed. Nothing; Equal to Chamberlain's Oolic Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy for Bowel Com plaints in Children. For a dollar ant) a ball an In dian performed a deed of daring near here on Wednesday which most men could not lie hired to do at any price. The feat which the red man undertook and success- full V carried out wag to swim the treacherous John Day River, now higher and swifter than for mar t years and filled with drift. It was at the old (iilliam ferry, where the Fossil-Waterman stage croses the river. For several days it has not been deemed safe to run the ferry there or at other places on the river because of danger from the drifting logs, says the Tele gram. The mail has been sent back and forth in a box suspended from the ferry cable, but Wednesday morn ing, while the box was on the other side, the rope which is used to pull it across became caught in some drift and was broken, and the only means of transportation thereby stopped. But it was not for ling, because sheep pelts are hard to find in Wheeler county this Spring, and consequently a dollar looks big to a siwash. Pro bably because of this fact Marion Gilliam, the mail contractor, was enabled to secure the services of one for the remuneration mention ed at the start. The river is about 150 yards wide at that place and is very swift. But after taking off all clothing and tying a shirt on his head, the Indian plunged in and reached the opposite bank safely less than a quarter of amile below. He then brought the box over along the cable hand over hand. COMPANY ISSUES PAMPHLET "We have used Chamberlain's Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Rtmedy in our family for years," says Mrs. 1. B. CUTLERY EVERY BLADE WARRANTED For Sale at the bee Hive The Deschutes Irrigation 4 Power Company has issued an il lustrated booklet showing its segre gated tract along the Deschutes and giving the terms by. which set ters may acquire title to the desert selections. Scenes of alfalfa fields, stock and sheep flock and herds are shown, together with views of several ranches along Crooked river which have been converted from areas of waste land into fertile and productive regions. The pamphlet eayg in part: Stock raising is in its infancy both in Oregon and Washington. The problem of winter feed for cat tle and sheep is one that is press ing for solution. The public runge is about gone. Both cattle and sheep on foot and dressed have appreciated steadily in cost during the post two or three years. Al falfa is needed for winter feed and for faltening. Stockmen and sheepmen pay gladly from $7 to t2Q per ton for alfalfa hay in the stack, according to the supply ob tainable. In Washington and Oregon the minimum price for alfalfa, purchased by contract in the stack immediately after first cutting, has been from $0.50 to $7 per ton. The cost of raising, harvesting and stacking is under (2 per ton. Irrigated land with a well estab lished crop of alfalfa will furnish a net income at the minimum of $80 per acre. Twenty acres in alfalfa under wise management, will yield a cash income suflicient to upiort a family, Best Cough Medicine For Children. hen you buy a cough medicine for small children you want one which you can place implicit confi tlence.
