Sprague Quick Hits Sprague had a winning football team last year, and coach Jay Minyard expects to do at least as well this year. The Olympians went 6-4 in 2014, ending up 6-3 in the Greater Valley Conference before losing a playoff game. Lost to graduation are Matt Kleinman, running back and linebacker; Levi Long, tackle and tight end; and Austin Brown, receiver and defensive back. Not all positions were decided at this writing, but returning offen- sive starters include quarterback Justin Cul- pepper, tackle Ryan Morgan, guard Bryce Webber, center Jake Nelson, tight end David Prosser, receiver Nick Brot- ton and tailback Anthony Nunn. Returning on defense are end Kyle Rosenau, linebackers Andrew Axel- son and Prosser, and tackle Nelson. The special teams had yet to be determined; the coach said they were “still by committee.” Asked how the rest of the conference looked, Minyard said, “It’s tough to say.” He noted that W. Salem and S. SEPTEMBER 2015, MCNARY FALL SPORTS PREVIEW, PAGE 9 Salem have many returning players. Minyard will be in his fourth year as the Olympians’ head coach and his 18th year overall in that capacity. He and line coach Pat Patpileggi will share the offensive coordinator duties. Luke Buchheit is the defensive coordinator. Other coaches are Ryan Cash, quarter- backs; Kary Hadden, running backs; Rod- ney Eudy, receivers; Aaron Lawson and Soren Sorensen; defensive linemen; Jimmy Roberts and Bryan Smith, linebackers; and DG Gier, defensive backs. “We’re just excited it’s football season again,” Minyard said. - Herb Swett, for the Keizertimes McKay Brett Rhodes, head coach at McKay, is rebuilding the Royal Scots team. Last year, McKay went 2-7. Seniors of 2014 who must be replaced include Orlando Lupien, Kris Williams and Kaholy Wu. Rhodes, who at this writing is not ready to name any promising newcomers, noted that two sophomores have joined the varsity. Likely receivers are Hector Diaz, Noah Tavera and Nick Brown. Candidates for fi rst-string running back positions are Demaris Bailey, Manny Miranda, fullbacks Matthew Jardine and Jaden Wolf, and wingback Andre Kipko. Mat- thew Ritchie is expected to start at quarterback. On the offensive line, Nate Hochsperier is likely to start at center, sophomore Ben Surov at left tackle, Tahj Ferro at one of the guard positions, Nolan Araujo at right tackle and Tristan Nelson at tight end. Surov, Hochsperier, Tajh and Oscar De La Cruz are the candidates for the fi rst-string defensive end positions. Araujo will be a defensive Call Us Today To Haul Off Your Old Junk… LOREN’S SANITATION & RECYCLING SERVICE, INC. 503.393.2262 VALLEY RECYCLING & DISPOSAL, INC. 503.585.4300 tackle. Linebacker contenders are Kipko, Jardine, Bryce Clifton and Wolf. In the secondary, Diaz and Justin Kimble are the cornerbacks, and Miranda, Bailey, Tavera and Brown are safety candidates. The only special-teams decision Rhodes had reached when interviewed was that Kipko would be a punter and placekicker. Saying he had seen little of his 2015 opponents, he called S. Salem a tough defending champion and observed that W. Albany seemed strong. He runs a wing-T offense and multiple defenses. Rhodes is his own offensive coordinator. Caleb Sin- gleton is the defensive coordinator. Kenny Mace coaches the offensive line, Joe Finnemore the defensive line and Greg LaFontaine the backs and special teams. “We’re excited to get started,” Rhodes said. - Herb Swett, for the Keizertimes 5 YEAR HISTORY 2010-2014 North Salem West Salem South Salem McNary McKay Sprague West Albany Forest Grove McMinnville League 6-22 14-4 20-8 12-16 5-23 20-8 29-7 13-23 14-22 Overall 10-40 44-12 29-23 12-32 12-36 32-21 43-14 19-32 19-31 2010 W.
