The nonprofi t organi- zation is aiming to raise $12,500 to begin funding the program as it expands into Portland and Eugene for the fi rst time this year on May 3. The Oregon cities are the fi rst of the nation wide Lemonade Day organization to utilize crowdfunding. The 30 day Indiegogo campaign will end on Feb. 12. Funds from the campaign will be used to cover the cost of educational materials giv- en to each kid which keeps the program free for them to participate in. The record breaking success of the pro- gram in Salem last year pre- sented the opportunity to be in Portland and Eugene. “I have never been more excited about a program than this. Being an entrepreneur myself I recognize the ben- efi ts an entrepreneurial pro- gram for kids can provide,” says state director Chip Con- rad. Oregon Entrepreneurs Network, Technology Asso- ciation of Oregon, and Port- land Incubator Experiment have signed as partners to support the event. Lemonade Day, started in Houston, Texas, was cre- ated to educate kids about business and entrepreneur- ship. Lemonade Day teaches youth how to start, own, and operate their own lemon- ade stand business. This is a strategic 14-step process that walks youth from a dream to a business plan, while teach- ing them the same principles required to start any big company. According to a release from the Salem Police De- partment, 77-year-old Da- vid McGregor of Salem was attempting to cross Center Street around 5:45 a.m. that day when he was struck and killed by a van driven by 64-year-old Stephen Bu- chanan of Keizer. “Mr. McGregor was in an unmarked crosswalk at- tempting to cross Center Street from the south side to the north side when he was struck by the 2005 full-sized van being operated by Mr. Buchanan,” the release stated. “He was wearing dark cloth- ing and was walking very slowly with a cane at the time of the incident.” McGregor was pro- nounced dead at the scene. sudoku Buchanan stopped immedi- ately and cooperated with the investigation into the incident. Center Street was closed for more than three hours as offi cials reconstruct- ed the accident scene. No arrests were made and no citations were issued as the investigation continues. In light of the incident, the SPD issued a reminder of safety tips for pedestrians. These tips include being vis- ible and vigilant while walk- ing on and around roadways, crossing roads at intersections and in crosswalks, looking both ways before crossing any road and making eye contact with approaching drivers, not assuming drivers see you just because you are in a cross- walk, wearing bright and re- fl ective clothing and carrying a light as well as having some type of fl ashing light to im- prove the chances of being seen. local weather Enter digits from 1-9 into the blank spaces.
