The entrance of Tur key Into the conflict on the side of the Germans adds to the complica tions and will undoubtedly widen the area affected. The bombardment of the Russian ports seems to hare taken place with out the direct sanction of the Turkish foreign office. The Turkish foreign minister made a disavowal to the French ambassador, declaring the ac tion was duo to the Oerman officers and crews on the Turkish war ships. SUBMARINE SINKS CRUISER British Vessel Caught Alons and De stroyed by Osrmen. London. The enterprise of Oerman submarines, which have been lurking along the French const on the Straits of Dover, seeking to get a shot at Brit ish ships engaged In bombarding the Oerman positions in Belgium was re warded when one of them attacked and sank the light cruiser Hermes as she was returning from Dunkirk. The greater part of the crew was rescued. The Hermee was a comparatively old vessel and from a naval viewpoint was of no great value, but the fact that she was attacked so near home indicates that the Oerman submarines must have a base somewhere on the pnrl of the Belgian coast which is oc cupied by the German troops, from which they menace ships of the alllos passing between England and France. That they have been un- uble to carry out a counter-offensive Is not as serious as Is the failure of the Oermuns to resume the Initiative. For the second time, the western enemy has resisted the crushing pro cess, and It Is doubtful whether a third attempt as powerful as either of the two others Is now possible. Certainly the battle of Klanders did not have the strength behind it of the first as sault, directed ugulnat Paris. While the larger ships of the Her man navy remain under the protection of their hurboru, the submarines con tinue to show activity, and another British cruiser has been sent to the bottom as a result of a raid by one of these destructive boats.
