We were graiified when Indian Commis sioner Jones consented to remain In the Indian Bureau and work out an Indian pulley with a second-term advantage en joyed by none of his predecessors. We are gratified new to learn that the salary of the bend of thai bureau hasjuat increased from $4,0.10 to .,O0X This levels it up to the salaries of the Li-d. P ni n nn-t No. 2. Director of th Geological Survey is silll $1,000 more. The change waa made wholly on the recommendation of the Secretary of the Interior without any solicitation of Mr, Jones, lie enjoys the compliment of Course, but being himself a succes-ful bus iness man, he is one of those who serve the Government from otherthan merely pecun iary motive. The duties of the Commis sioner of Indian affair grow each year more burdensome and preplexing m the point of contact between the Indian and their awgresssive white neighbors increase, and hitherto the salary has been inade quate. Havingstudied that particular ques tion 011 the s round at iirt band, we have not been able to take the name view of the Standing Rock leaseswhich Mr. Jones takes from his offlite standpoint. Nevertheless, we believe in him hs a straightforward, diligent, conscientious public official, with whose Judgment we tegret oconaionally to diir-r. But we have never yt found an Infallible Commissioner. (New York In dependent, Apr. 24, 1W2. THE CHEMAWA BAND.
