CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Sidway said, “We are still today, Wednesday, rebooting and replacing equipment that was dam- aged as a result.” The Sidways privately hired a structural engi- neer, Stu Edwards out of Ontario, to examine the building Sunday, and he determined there was no damage to the hotel. On Tuesday afternoon, Resort Street fi nally opened. The hotel and restaurant are now fully open and operational again. Fire Chief Wills said in his report that the property is valued at approximately $300K with $150K lost and $150K saved. Contents inside the building, as well as their value, have not yet been determined. The building was utilized as storage for The Geiser Grand, and no one was injured in the collapse. Sidway said there is a long process ahead involv- ing cleanup, insurance and plans for the building. Prior to the Sidways’ ownership, the building was well known as The Baker Furniture Company, owned and operated by the Neubergers. I have historic photos of it under con- struction. “The ground fl oor was used for a variety of retail, for most of the 20th century Baker Furniture Company owned by broth- ers Bert and Hans Neuber- ger, Jews who fl ed Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. “We became fast friends with Hans in the late 90s during the restoration and early operating days of the Geiser Grand. “He gave us the ‘inside skinny’ on how Baker City really works, and regaled us with wonderful stories about Leo Adler and other colorful Baker City char- acters. “He always said he’d sell us the building when he retired, and we always planned to some day uti- lize that building for more guest rooms. “Sadly Bert and Hans passed away before they could retire. We sub- sequently bought the building from their heirs, three nieces who live in Portland.” While she doesn’t know what the future is for the building just yet, Sidway says she’s heard a number of ideas from the com- munity and will look for feedback when the time comes to move forward.
