Brooks Baker City, 1928-2016 Howard C. Brooks, be- loved family man and ge- ologist, died November 6, 2016, at his home in Howard Baker City, Brooks Oregon, with wife Colleen by his side. Howard was born De- cember 3, 1928, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to his mother, Gladys Fretwell Brooks and his father, Claude Cecil Brooks. Howard was employed by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries from 1956 to 1991, working from the field office in Baker City, Oregon, and continued in contract work with the department for another ten years. Howard’s accom- plishments in the field of geology in eastern Oregon and western Idaho, which include authoring and co-authoring twenty maps, authoring and co-authoring numerous articles and books, including Plate Tectonics and the Geo- logic History of the Blue Mountains and Gold and Silver in Oregon, will remain valuable to the continual interpretation of the geology of this region. Howard’s latest book, A Pictorial History of Gold Mining in the Blue Moun- tains of Eastern Oregon, was published in 2007. The book is now in its third printing, and How- ard’s purpose in writing the book was to let people know, in lay terms, about gold mining in this area. Howard was devoted to his family, his community, as a member of various community boards and councils and as a volun- teer, having received a number of awards for his service, and his career. One highlight of his career was an expedition to the Mariana Islands on a U.S. geological survey ship. The ship’s mission was to gather rock samples from the ocean floor. Howard loved rocks and hiking in the hills, swales, and mountains, eager to help interpret what he saw in a vein or an outcropping of rock. He also enjoyed golf, hunting, and his fa- vorite pastime, fishing. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wil- liam, and by his parents. Howard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Colleen Brooks; three sons, James Brooks, and his wife, Dot Wilbur- Brooks, Daniel Brooks, and Michael Brooks, all of North Carolina; a daughter, Cynthia Sharratt, and her husband Daniel Sharratt of Union, Oregon; five granddaughters, Elizabeth Brooks and Christine Brooks, of North Carolina, Emily Sharratt and Chris Nantz of La Grande, Or- egon, Katy Schlegel and husband Scott Schlegel of Albany, Oregon, Ash- ley Toutain and husband Christopher Toutain, of Or- ange, California; and three great-grandchildren. Should friends and family desire, memorial contri- butions may be made in Howards honor to the Baker Heritage Museum in care of Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
