Funeral services were held Friday, August 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel in Halfway, Oregon (46568 Cornuco- pia Hwy) preceded by a viewing from 10-10:45 a.m.. Interment will be in the Richland Cemetery in Richland, Oregon. A potluck luncheon will follow for family, friends, and neighbors at the New Bridge Grange beginning about 2:00 p.m. Emma was born May 2, 1941 in Nampa, Idaho to Paul (Ben) Koch and Dorothy Coffey. She spent her fi rst years in Nampa until her family moved to New Meadows, Idaho where they ran the service station in town. Emma grew up spending lots of time outdoors on hunting and fi shing trips with her dad. She was a champion skeet shooter, played honky-tonk piano with the local band begin- ning when she was 12, and often worked the service station alone when her parents were gone. Emma was a good student, and had dreamed of becom- ing the fi rst woman forest ranger in Idaho. Shortly after graduating from high school in New Meadows, she married Calvin Hugh Whitnah on May 17, 1959. Emma and Calvin raised three sons: Wes (Grace) of Aloha, Oregon; Michael (Anjee) of LaGrande, Oregon; and Don (Shelly) of Highland, Utah; and are grandparents of 12: Becky Boudrero (Jeff), Robbie (Tessa), Sean (Amanda), Bethany Johnson (Mark) and Bryan; Jarin, Jaina, Caedra, Alora, and Qwi- nah; Zachary and Eli; and are great grandparents of 3: Ryan and Dominic Bou- drero, and Duke Whitnah; with more on the way. Emma was known for her cooking and baking, and would decorate cakes for birthdays and special occasions long before it was popular. As her boys were fi nishing high school, Emma returned to school to become an x-ray technician. She worked in Portland, La Grande, and Ontario, traveling fre- quently across the country to learn new skills in x-ray and ultrasound. Later in life she learned to play the fi ddle and was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers’ groups in Eastern Oregon/Idaho and in Utah. Several times a week she’d play her fi ddle, accordion, and piano, especially for older groups who ap- preciated hearing the old country tunes they grew up with. Arrangements are in the care of Coles Tribute Cen- ter at 1950 Place St. Baker City, Oregon 97814. To light a candle in mem- ory of Emma, please visit: www.colestributecenter. com.
