Public comments are welcome. SUMMER READING PROGRAM KICKOFF Young and Early readers will explore all things fitness and health this summer as Baker County Public Library presents “On Your Mark, Get Set… Read.” Planned activities include a drama per- formance, group games, physical challenges, art projects, science and engineering experiments, and more. The 2016 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through teenager, with programs, prize drawings, storytimes, and more. Our kickoff event will be a play by the Traveling Lantern troupe on June 15 at 10:00 a.m. Registra- tion for “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read” has already begun and continues throughout the summer. A fun-filled rodeo weekend for aspiring cowboys and cowgirls in Halfway. Mutton busting, roping, barrel racing, and bronc and bull riding round out a full rodeo schedule for partici- pating junior contestants. The event will kick off with a parade at 10 a.m. in downtown Richland. Then on to opening ceremo- nies at the grange park and kids games. There will be art in the park and there are still vendor spaces available at $5 per space. Crafty people, antiques, collectables, shabby chic and other sellable items can be part of this event by calling 893-6292 to reserve a space. There will be a pie auction at 1:30 with great prizes. Bring pies to the grange kitchen by noon. The kitchen will open in the park at 11 a.m. with burgers, hot dogs, nachos and shortcake. KEATING VALLEY SWCD MEETING The Keating Soil and Water Conservation District will be having their monthly meeting on June 21st at 12 noon at the USDA Service Center; 3990 Midway Drive in Baker City, OR. To light a candle, leave a condolence, or upload pictures in memory of Corina, please visit: www.grayswestco.com. — Obituaries — Marguerite Reed Baker City, 1918-2016 Marguerite passed into eternal life on in Seaside, Oregon. Marguerite was born October Marguerite 25, 1918 in Reed Baker City, Oregon. She was the daughter of Gaston and Elizabeth Dieudonne. She attended St. Francis Academy in Baker City until her freshman year. She then went to Forest Ridge Convent in Se- attle, Washington until her graduation in 1936. She attended San Francisco College for Women and graduated in 1940. She received her Masters De- gree in Social Work from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1942. Upon completion of her schooling, Marguerite went to work for Catholic Charities in San Francisco, California. On January 16, 1943 she married Preston Reed in Washington, D.C. They lived there for six months and then moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Preston was working as a Navy officer. They spent one year there until Preston went oversees. Margue- rite moved to Palo Alto, California and worked as a social worker for the police department in 1944. Upon Preston’s return from ser- vice in 1946, they moved to Baker City, Oregon. After returning to Baker City Marguerite went to work for Catholic Charities as an adoption caseworker. She worked for them from 1942 until her retirement in 2000. During this time she also worked for 15 years as a social worker for the Baker School District. Preston and Marguerite owned Reed’s Furniture Store where Marguerite often helped out. Marguerite was a member of St. Francis DeSales Cathedral and the Altar Society and she was a member of the choir for many years. She was selected Legacy Woman of the Year in 1989. She was also on the Citizens Review Board and the board of the Oregon Catholic Conference. She lived a busy, active life, a life devoted to service to her family, her church, and her community. She was a woman of great faith; she loved the church and valued her friendships with other parishioners, priests, and bishops. She enjoyed international travel and visited many wonderful places with Preston and her children. One of her most cherished memories was a trip to the Vatican for a private visit with the Pope. Marguerite was proud of the fact that she had given over 148 pints of blood to the local Blood Bank. She felt this was an extremely important service that should be done by every- one who was able. Marguerite spent her last years in Portland and Seaside, close to all her children. She always loved being at the beach so living in Seaside brought her a lot of joy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Preston Reed, their daughter Monica Reed, granddaughter Heather Reed-Lomax, her brother Roger Dieudonne, and her parents Gaston and Eliza- beth. She is survived by her 4 children: son Greg Reed and his wife Janice of Tacoma Washington; daughter Terri Reed of Seaside, Oregon; son Tim Reed and his wife Pat of Portland, Oregon; and daughter Vonie and her husband Larry Aeschli- man of Kennewick, WA. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Jason, Jamie, Tasha, John, Kevin, Bob, and numerous great grandchildren. Mom’s kind soul and giving spirit touched so many and will never be forgotten. Memorial contributions in Marguerite’s memory may be directed to St. Francis Diocese. This may be done through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, Oregon. 97814. A rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. June 1, 2016 at St. Francis Cathedral in Baker City. A funeral mass will be held at the Cathe- dral on Friday June 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will be served in the Parish Hall after the internment at the cemetery. Edwin Irving Hood Baker City, 1931-2016 Edwin Irving Hood, 84, of Baker City died May 28th, 2016 at his residence. A graveside Edwin service will Hood take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City on Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jesse Whitford of the Baker City Christian Church officiating. Ed was born October 22, 1931 in Lewiston, Maine to Hewett C. Hood and Lillian P. (Stackhouse) Hood. He graduated from college in 1957 with a Bachelor degree and a certificate in aeronautical engineering. He served in the United States Marine Corp as a Sergeant for three years seeing combat in North Korea. After the Marine Corp, Ed was self employed as a commercial fisherman and retired after 30 years. On October 22, 2014, Edwin and Dorothy Eddings were married in Baker City, Oregon. He had many interest and accomplishments dur- ing his life some of those include; working as a farm hand, cutting wood, carpentry, building boats, commercial fishing, en- trepreneurship, inventing, mining, and prospecting. Edwin is survived by his wife Dorothy Eddings of Baker City, Oregon. He is preceded in death by his first wife Mildred T. Hood. Frances Carol Smithson Baker City, 1946-2016 Frances Carol Smithson passed away on Monday, May 23, 2016 at her home in Sparta Oregon, sur- rounded by her family. She was 69 years of age. A celebration of Frances’s life will be held later this year, date and time TBD. Frances was born Octo- ber 10, 1946 in Hillsboro, Oregon to Keith and Edra Dangerfield. Her family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1952 and this is where she spent most of her life. In Grants Pass, she met her future hus- band Bob Smithson who survives. They married in 1963 and went on to have six children. Frances was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grand- mother, and friend. She had a love for sewing, reading, gardening, and caring for people. She worked for over 30 years at Highland House Nursing Center in Grants Pass, Or- egon. She moved to Sparta Oregon in 2012 to care for her aging parents. Frances is survived by six children; Sherry Smith- son of Sparta, OR, Bobby Smithson of West Linn, OR, Cindy Smithson of Palmer, AK, Sandy Smith of Eagle Point, OR, Angela Smithson of Sparta, OR, and Stephen Smithson and wife Alysea of Portland, OR; her father, World War II veteran, Keith E Danger- field of Sparta, OR, sister Margaret Ann Lutman of Grants Pass, OR, brother Michael Dangerfield of Roseburg, OR, 12 grand- children, 4 great grandchil- dren, and dearest friends Glenda McLoud of Grants Pass, OR, and Linda Wil- liams of Anchorage, AK.
