DEC. 22. 1954 Sherrill Clark Wins 1954 DAR Award Chorus Presents Christmas Program Annual chorus Christmas program was held last night in o., . , , , , , . , . , Ithe high school gymnasium at Sherrill Ann Clark, 17 year old honor student of i8;0o p.m. under the direction of the senior class of Ashland senior hieh school ha: won the coveted Daughters of the American Revolu tion Citizenship Award given annually by the locai chapter of D.A.R. Sherrill was one of three girls nominated by the A.H.S. faculty. The other girls nominated were Nancy Pierce and Julie Smith, both seinors. These candidates were voted on by the student body. Qualifications for Nomination In order to be nominated a candidate is judged on four out standing qualities: dependabil ity .service and scholarship, leadership, and patriotism. National honor society mem ber and a straight one student, Sherrill is also a member of the Girls Athletic association. She is a member of the student of fice force in the high school and is a college preparatory stu. dent. Name to be inscribed Sherrill will receive a medal and will have her name inscrib ed on the Marshall-Wells pla que at the high school. She will also be entered ia the regional contest Last year's winner, Barbara Wray, was picked as second in the state cf Oregon by the Gov ernor. Others who have won this honor have been: Helen Dunn, Mary Louise Robertson, Ssther Wade, Helen Westfall. Also winners were Helen Elam, Clara Ann Roberson, Ce lene Morgan, Erlene Norberg, Betty Sue Reed, Marjorie Lutz, Shirley Wilcox, Mary Lou Hahn, Marbeth McKeever, Ve nita Roberson, Ann Fullertin, Virginia Pritchard, Carole Sul livan, Norma Stephens and Barbara Wray. Mr. Bernard Windt, chorus instructor. . Solo numbers included "O, Holy Night," by Betty Paschke; "What Child Is Thee," by Eve ljn Deets; and "Silent Night," by Lee Anne Leach. Songs sung by the chorus were "Mary, Mary, Where Is Your Baby?", "Christmas Nat us," and "Joyous Carol." the (background was a church setting with a large stained glass window behind the singer. Precessional was "Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel." Soph Assembly Brings Laughs Sophomore Assembly, held Friday, December 10, 1954, was combination of skits, music. and dancing with original versions. The first act was a rollicking murder skit. The scene was an English restaurant and the characters were played by Gerald Stowell, Roland Kelts, Dean Root and Dean Mason. Following the skit was Phyl lis Knapp sing:ng "Lying Little Daisy." Hersecond number was "The High and the Mighty." Dean Root gave a mockery of a radio commercial. Next was a rendition of "Dragnet" with Bev. Hakes, Sandy Thurston and Marcia Macklin as the strawberry Debate Squad Wins Trophies The Ashland Debate squad, represented by Richard Lamb, Larry Kerr, seniors, Bruce Graham and Jerry Miller, jun iors, entered three divisions and garnered two trophies and the thieves and Barbara Johnson, tournament. Larry reached the finals of extemporaneous speaking and placed fourth, while Bruce also held Dec. 15, 1954. His program proved to be very popular with the students. Mr. Jarto played such favorites as "The Spinning Wheel," ' White Christmas," "Donkey Serenade," "Ave Maria" and "Hot Canary." H i s accompanist play e d three solos. "Malaguena," a very fast Spanish dance, and the quiet, ever beautiful "Clair De Lune." a P.E.O. SPONSORS TEA P. E. O. sponsore d a tea for the junior and senior girls of Ashland, Friday, December 3, 1954. Mrs. Jean Youndell of Cavi? Junction, a graduate of Cottey Collece, told about the many activities at Cottey, which is sponsored by P. E. O. Slides were shown as Mrs. Youndell explained what "life at Cottey" as like. division. Singing "You Are My Sun shine" and "A Hole in the Bot tom of the Sea"w ere Don Har per and Steve Jolls, with Steve also playing the guitar. Girls at a slumber party sang their version of "Mr. Sand man," then tuned in "Louella Parsnips" (Jeanne Hargis) and heard the latest Hollywood gas- sip. The last number was Steve Joles singing "A Crazy Mixed- Next tournament for the de- jUp Song." Following close bheind are the seniors with 19, sophomores, 18, and juniors, 13. Girls League Christmas pro gram held this morning in the gym was different from the us ual Ashland high Christmas program. Instead of a message given by a local minister, the Christmas story was presented by students of AHS. The program opened with the AHS Chorus singing, "Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel" as they marched to their places on the stage. Ave Maria was then sung by Yovonna Stimson, senior. Angel Tells News First tableau was pictured with the angel, played by Nor ma Kerns, senior, appearing to Mary, portrayed by Donna Howell, senior. Second tableau was the an gel appearing to the shepherds. The shepherds were: Heather MacDougall, Betty Blatter, Carole Lindahl and Dorris Ash craft, seniors. A chorus of first graders from Lincoln school followed the second tableau, singing "Away in the Manger." After this, the curtain opened with the scene of Mary, Joseph, por trayed by Gene Long, senior, the shepherds and a child, pic tured by Barbara James, senior, all worshiping Christ. Follow ing this was Betty Paschke, sen ior, singing, "O Holy Night. Wisemen See Star Fourth tableau portrayed the wise men seeing the Bethlehem star. During this scene, "Star of the East" was sung by Bea Ina Cluff and Nancy Bundock, sen iors. The wisemen were Marjie Reed, Edith Hil and Phyllis Walker, seniors. The grand finale with Mary Joseph, the shepherds and wise men, and the litle child all at the manger followed in the pro gram. The Christmas assembly ended with the chorus singing. Silent Night." Chorus Sings Ashland High chorus, under the direction of Bernard Windt, sang, "Come, Shepherds, Come' and "Mary, Mary, Where's Your Baby?" during or preceding the appropriate tableaus. Scripture reading by Beverly Barksdale also accompanied the portrayals. CHRISTMAS VACATION Christmas holidays begin Wednesday, December 22. and continue until January 3. 1955. FLAG GIRLS TO PERFORM Students! Keep December 30 open. This is the date that the Ashland high school flag girls will make their first appear ance.
