" Lewiston lays claim to having the most advantageous position of any cily in the state with reference to commercial advantages. First, it lies at the head of river navigation, a point of special interest now that the question ol an open river to the sea is assuming such vast proportions, and creating a demand which will result in clearing the river from Lewiston to tidewater, so that large steamers can ply the entire length of the river between these points. This secures to Lewiston the most advantageous shipping point in north Idaho. The imin and produce of this vast region, composed of the counties of Latah, Shoshone, Idaho and Nez Perce, will be shipped here to be trans ferred to the river route, it being at all times the cheaper mns of transporta tion i again, the topographical location of Lewiston secures for it every line of road extended for the development of central Idaho. The Clearwater flows from its source in the Bitter Roots almost directly west, cutting the state by a deep canyon. The Snake and Salmon rivers from the south do likewise. Any railroad projected into the rich mineral and agricultural centers of the state, must pass up or down these deep river canyons. They form the cheap estand only practical routes for railroads penetrating the undeveloped portions of the state. Lewiston, located at the intersection of the Snake and Clear water, is the common point at which all lines must meet. Its natural location of necessity makes it the future great railroad center of the northwest. ljewhtn Ttllir. ' ' ' ; : Ottnalaska is not only a fur-trading center of great importance; but also a point of call and base of supplies for . the whaling fleet annually cruising in Bering sea and the Arctic ocean, The natural wealth of the Aleutian chain of islands is confined almost solely to products of the sea. ' The furs are confined to a limited number of foxes of inferior quality and sea otters, the latter de nc.wng in numbers from year to year. Fish in immense quantities and of great variety can be found in the waters surrounding these islands. Nearly ail die numerous bays and harbors are visited by schools of herring two or three timrs a year and every stream and rivulet has its run of salmon, while the bays and adjoining banks are crowded with codfish and a striped fish re w inding mackerel, which ii of most excellent flavor and great richness. No part of this pivalory wealth, however, is utilized at present beyond the annual si.jij.ly of dri. d fi:,h for the natives of the . islands, who have decreased during the List decade from 2,500 to less than 900 of both sexes. 'The climate of these ijlands is mild, and there can be no doubt that many of them contain level land that could he utilized for stock and sheep raising were it not for the diii'ii 'iilty of bringing the product to market. The n jK.rt of the comptroller of the currency shows that the number of national banks in Washington has increased fifty per cent, during the past year, now numbering sixty. 1 'he total capita! stock is $5,864,500, an increase of marly $:,xxyxo ; surplus fund, $1,503,407 undivided profits, $622,957; 11 (IKi.h.i.d deposits, $13,061,731, an increase of about $1,000,000 ; loans and lii .ioui'.ts, $14,136,391, an increase, of nearly $3,000,000. The government has authoriied the side of lots in the townsite of PmatelUi, Idaho. The register and receiver of the land office will conduct the s;de win.
