Walter Wiles, of Wells, was in Corvallis a few days ago. He is hale and hearty and looking bet ter than he has in ten years. Scarcely more than two months ago he had a complete collapse and was brought to the Corvallis hospital, but he recuQerated rap idly ana is now none the worse for wear. Hall, a former Cor vallisite now traveling for a Portland concern, will arrive here today to join Mrs. Hall and spend several day3 visiting relatives and friends. LOCAL AND PERSONAL NEWS Elbert Thompson, of the firm of Thompson Brothers, of Salem, architects and builders, were in Indepen dence Saturday with a view of taking up the contract of building the J. S. Cooper residence. Mr. Thompson is? an old acquaintance of the ed itor, and he told of several fine residences he had built in this county. He stated his firm had built fourteen houses in this county last year and the cheapest of the fourteen was $3450. He also made a contract for a card to run a year in the Monitor for liia firm at Salem. Fr-jd Hooper has the -contract for building a new hop house for H. B. Fletcher on his hop yard across the river. Mr. Fletcher has the old Kutch yard and will begin picking this year about Sep tember 2. The new hop house will have a 30-foot kiln and be a much needed improvement on this yard. A wagon load of material for tbe hop picking machine at Horet Bros, yard whs brought in town Saturday.
