WILL HE COME IN? “ I fear we are going to have a very poor Christmas at our house,” said Jane to Florence as they were walk ing home from school. “ You know father's been out of work on account of the strike, nnd mother's long Illness will make it next to im possible to buy gifts for the children. And we may not even have a Christ mas tree!” And at the thought of a Christmas without a tree, her voice which had been tremulous, broke Into a half stifled sob. Florence looked very thoughtful, then said In comforting tones, “ Hut your father’s at work again Isn’t he?” “ Yes." "And your mother’s health Is much better.” "Yes, we expect her downstairs for Christmas day.” "Well, then I think, Jane, that you shoidd have great cause for rejoicing at your house—Christmas tree, or no Christmas tree.” “ I had not thought of that Florence, but you ure right." “ Sometimes. I think we lose the real spirit of Christinas,” continued Jane, "by thinking that Christmas comes from ulmt we get or give instead of realising that it is right in our hearts.’' By this time the friends had come to the parting of the way, and with a friendly nod and “ Goodbye," went to their homes to vision anew tile possi bilities of Christmas. We have tried to work out n little Christmas program for those who ob ject to Santa Claus. We respect the opinions of ail who think the decep- tion should he stopped and feel that we ought to help them to nrrange a disillusionized and thoroughly harm less Christmas— what you might call a germless and renovated and disin fected and veracious Joy season— which the children will take hold of with enthusiasm without in after days wishing to upbraid their parents nnd hiss at them, “ You lied to u s!” We suggest, therefore, that the chil dren be called together on Christmas morning by the governor and address ed as follows: “ Kids: We shall now enjoy our gift giving. I tore off a few sends from my roll the other day and. handed them to your mother, nnd she dived headlong Into tlie bargain counter Hood and for two whole days appeared not again, and when site did crawl out, battered, Jammed, ragged, torn, bruised and old, she clutched to her bosom these few gimcracks, fol-de-rols nnd highly un- • ■rviceable articles. We have placed them upon these chairs so as pi divest the business of any stage effects that might heighten the pleasure In any way or gi\e a false impression. You are to understand tliut 1 had to give up for these thin • and I wish to for get about it before 1 feel real good In OPPOSED TO CHRISTMAS PIE side ii 'ain. and with these few re marks we will now fall to. nnd you The Puritans were not alone in want to be quick about it. for I want their opposition to mince or Christmas pie. Tlie Quakers also fought against to read my paper In pence.” —Judge. It, uml at length even many good peo ple of tlie Church of England began to tldnk that clergymen should abstain from It, against which prejudice liick- erstaffe thus remonstrates: “The Christinas pie Is, In its own nature, a kind of consecrated cake or badge of distinction, und yet it is often for bidden the druid of the family. Strange that a sirloin of beef, whether boiled or roasted, when entire Is ex posed to the utmost depredations and invasions, hut if minced Into small pieces ami tossed up with plums nnd sugar It changes the property, and for sooth Is meat for his master.” CITY AND COUNTRY A program of Christmas mnsic will be presented at the Metho dist church Sunday evening.
