Inspection night proved to he a grand success from the number of members present and the total ex ceeded any previous drill period ex cept perhaps the day the company was mustered into Federal service. It is to be regreted that our ar mory is inadequate for full company instruction and Lieutenant Instruc tor Newton was compelled to de monstrate the different movements of squad drill to the company by means of a squad composed o f the non-commissioned officers. The boys used the new rifles for the first time and the guns didn't seem to w ork w ell for some of them. The equipment was spread out for in spection of the company and each man was shown what would he al lotted him in case of a call to arms. No place for a weakling. Captain Stidd asked if anyone objected to drillin g but from all reports the men are hack of Company K to a man. Later in the evening a feed was de voured, prepared by our cooks, Cox and Lochridge, and believe us, these two can cook. If any organization in the city is contemplating any thing of this kind in the near fu ture, they w ill make no mistake hv engaging them. It is the intention of the company to prepare a small feed each drill night and no doubt the efficiency of thjs organization should improve rapidly. by the government. It is hoped the pay roll w ill be ready for the com pany members to sign by next drill night. The adjutant general has inform ed us that oar sister city, Dallas, will soon get a company in the N. G. O. foe artillery, also that the platoon in M cM inn ville w ill be en larged to a company. Also the adjutant general wished to know if Independence had taken any steps toward a new armory. He stated em phatically that it would he necessary to keep this question before the people all the time, that all the organizations must be hack of it and boost and when the time is ripe, whirh w ill be before we re alize it, all the details w ill be out of the way. For the benefit of those who are not fam iliar with the fi nancing end, we might state that the city, county and state stand a third ench«of the expense. Next fall w ill ho the proper time to include this item in the county budget and the state legislature w ill act upon their proportion at the next session. As to the city being up to the limit of its taxable power now, the gen eral said that a special tax could he levied for this purpose which was done at Silverton. These are a few of the details that our citizens wilt do well to think about at their lei sure and the company feels confi dent that an arm ory w ill come. “ EAT MORE BREAD And reduce the high cost of living.” ■ || holsum BREAD IS TH E C H E A PE S T A S W E L L A S T H E MOST W H O LESO M E ON T H E M A R K E T TO D AY.
