6 Wednesday,December30,2015The Nugget Newspaper,Sisters,Oregon Outlaws football players get kudos from state By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws had seven football players selected to all-stateteams.SeniorLogan Schutte and junior Jacob Gurney were both stand- out players for the Outlaws throughout the season, and werefirst-teampicks. Schutte was first-team at defensive back, and also earned second-team honors atrunningback.Offensively, Loganrushedforover1,000 yardsandwasathreatevery timehetouchedtheball. Logan is an example of hard work paying off, combined with a drive to succeed. — Coach Gary Thorson “Loganisanexampleof hardworkpayingoff,com- bined with a drive to suc- ceed,” said Coach Gary Thorson. “Defensively, he was a leader from his free- safety position and was a forcecomingupagainstthe run for us. Logan has good vision as a running back, and was the spearhead of a backfieldthathadthreeall- league running backs this pastseason.” Gurney was a first-team pickatlinebacker.Jacobled theteamintacklesandwas agreatleaderbyexampleon defense. “Jacob is very hard- working, physical, and has becomeagoodstudentofthe gameforus,”saidThorson. “Herunsverywell,andhas goodlateralpursuit.Weare excited to have him back for another season leading at the linebacker position, whichwasastrengthforour defensethispastseason,and shouldbenextfallaswell.” Senior Devin Slaughter was a second-team pick at offensive line, and also earnedhonorablementionat defensiveline. “Devinwasaforceinour offense, particularly in our outside run game when he was pulling,” saidThorson. “Devinlovesthegame,and itshowsinhowhardheplays on Friday nights. He has a chancetodowellatthenext level if he chooses to. Like severalofhisteammateson the all-state list, he earned thiswithhisoff-seasonwork ethicintheweightroom,and it showed in his physicality onthefield.” Jacob is very hard- working, physical, and has become a good student of the game for us. — Coach Gary Thorson Senior Mitch Gibney earnedhonorablementionat defensiveline.Mitchledthe teaminsacks,andalongwith Slaughter helped terrorize teamsaroundtheleague. “I am not sure I have hadaplayerinallmyyears of coaching play as hard as Mitch did, and that effort helped carry us in many of our games,” said Thorson. “He became another one of ourplayerswhoworkedhard toimprovehimselfinterms of assignments and tech- nique, and that combined with his physical abilities made him a great player in ourprogram.” JuniorTylerHeadearned second-team honors at the tight end position. Head was the Outlaws’ leading receiver,andcaughtseveral key touchdown passes in severalgamesthatwerebig playsandmomentum-chang- ersfortheOutlaws. “Tylerisaverygoodath- leteathisposition,withgood photo by Jerry bAldock Jacob Gurney (No. 22) was a defensive force for the outlaws. speed,”saidThorson.“Tyler hasaknackforthebigplay, and has developed into a forceforus,withthepoten- tial to do even bigger and betterthingsfortheOutlaws hisseniorseason.” Senior Rory Petterson was honorable mention on theoffensiveline.Rorywas a three-year starter for the Outlaws,andwasaleaderby exampleonandoffthefield. “Rory is everything we wantourplayerstobeinthe area of character and work ethic,”saidThorson.“Heis one of our hardest workers onthefield.Hewasatech- nicianattheoffensivetackle position,andplayedahuge role in our run game. He’s extremely reliable, and the leader on an offensive line that improved greatly from last season. He’s very well respected by his peers and coachesforbeingtheperson heis.” Roundingoutthefootball honors was senior Austin Cantwell,whoearnedhonor- ablementionontheoffensive line. “Austin is arguably one ofourmostimprovedplay- ers from last season,” said Thorson. “He made great stridesasafootballplayerfor usthisseason.Austinisvery athletic and fast, and grew intooneofthebesttacklers bymakingacommitmentto excellenceforus.Hebecame oneofourbestlinemenfrom a technique standpoint.
