Students, Aspen Lakes come through Search and rescue

Lakes Golf Course. Every
fall, Aspen Lakes has a
canned-food-drive golf spe-
cialinwhichgolfersdonate
cans of food and in turn
receiveareducedgreensfee.
Thisyearthefoodwasadded
to the high school canned-
fooddrive.
The donations had an
even greater impact when
multipliedbyacashmatch-
ing grant to be donated

Hike for free to start the New Year
For the fifth year in a
row, the Oregon Parks and
R e c r e a t i o n D e p a r t m e n t
(OPRD) is partnering with
America’sStateParkstooffer
freeguidedFirstDayHikesin
stateparksacrossOregonon
NewYear’sDay.Information
aboutthespecialhiketotake
place at Smith Rock State
Park follows. The usual $5
day-use parking fee will be
waived on January 1 only.
Hike time is 10 a.m.,
startingattheparkWelcome
Center(greenyurt).
Thisisamoderatethree-
mile hike on the Wolf Tree
Trail. The first quarter-mile
and last quarter-mile are on
afairlysteepgraveltrail,and
theentiretrailcouldbeslip-
peryificy.
Participants may see a
varietyofwildlifeincluding
goldeneaglenestshighinthe
cliffs.Dogsmustbeonasix-
footleash.
Participants should dress
inlayers,wearsturdyshoes,
and bring water as well as
a camera or binoculars for
wildlife viewing. In case of
inclement weather, the park
shouldbecontacteddirectly
tofindoutaboutcancellation.

participants to share photos
of their First Day Hike via
social media by using the
hashtag#ORfirstdayhikeson

The Deschutes County
Sheriff’s Office is accept-
ingapplicationsfrommem-
bers of the community who
areinterestedinbecominga
searchandrescuevolunteer.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s
Office Search and Rescue
(DCSO SAR) is one of the
busiest search and rescue
unitsinthestateofOregon.
In 2015, DCSO SAR
completed more than 300
missions and trainings.
Volunteersarehighlyskilled
and range from general
searchers to those capable
ofhighlytechnicalmissions
such as mountain rescue,
swift-water rescue, diving
operationsandmore.
Selected applicants, who
mustbeatleast21yearsof
age,arerequiredtocomplete
the DCSO SAR Academy,
which consists of approxi-
mately 100 hours of train-
ing.Thisyear’sacademywill
beginonMarch28,withvol-
unteers graduating on May
12.Generally,trainingoccurs
on Monday andWednesday
evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.,
which consist of classroom
exercises and is followed
upwithadayoftrainingon
Saturdayforoutdoorpracti-
calexercises.
Academy attendees will
receiveinstructioninseveral
areasincluding,butnotlim-
itedto:navigation,tracking,
wilderness survival, search
tactics, first aid/CPR and
how DCSO SAR operates.
Includedintheacademyisa
“packtest,”whichconsistsof
afive-milehike(2-1/2miles
uphilland2-1/2milesdown-
hill) carrying a 25-pound
backpack.Thetimelimitfor
thistestis100minutes.Each
academy attendee will be
assigned a mentor to assist
withthesuccessfulcomple-
tionoftheacademy.

Once applications are
reviewed, applicants that
meet minimum qualifica-
tions will be contacted and
required to attend an infor-
mationalsession.Applicants

an oral board interview. A
background investigation
will be completed for all
applicants who are selected
aftertheoralboardinterview.
Some qualities necessary
include the ability to fit in
withourcurrentvolunteers,a
goodattitudeandtheability
tofunctionasateamplayer.
Thereisa$100entryfee
forthoseselected,whichcov-
ersinitialsearchandrescue
volunteer clothing, issued
upon graduation from the
academy.
