Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (DCSO SAR) is one of the busiest search and rescue unitsinthestateofOregon. In 2015, DCSO SAR completed more than 300 missions and trainings. Volunteersarehighlyskilled and range from general searchers to those capable ofhighlytechnicalmissions such as mountain rescue, swift-water rescue, diving operationsandmore. Selected applicants, who mustbeatleast21yearsof age,arerequiredtocomplete the DCSO SAR Academy, which consists of approxi- mately 100 hours of train- ing.Thisyear’sacademywill beginonMarch28,withvol- unteers graduating on May 12.Generally,trainingoccurs on Monday andWednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., which consist of classroom exercises and is followed upwithadayoftrainingon Saturdayforoutdoorpracti- calexercises. Academy attendees will receiveinstructioninseveral areasincluding,butnotlim- itedto:navigation,tracking, wilderness survival, search tactics, first aid/CPR and how DCSO SAR operates.
