Wednesday, March 18, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon District starts search for new superintendent By Jim cornelius News Editor The Sisters School District has gotten the ball rolling on finding a new superintendent in the wake of the announced departure of Jim Golden. Golden has been named superintendent of the Greater Albany School District. School Board Chair Don Hedrick reported that the dis- trict has posted a listing with the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. “They have a placement service throughout the state,” he said. Additionally, the district has received proposals from superintendent search firms in Oregon and Washington. Hedrick said they will also inquire with other firms located outside the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon firm’s pro- posal totals approximately $10,000 in fees and expenses, 25 The Nugget Newspaper Crossword By Jacqueline E. Mathews, Tribune News Service Hedrick reported. The school board will review proposals this week and determine if the district wants to use a search firm. “If we want to go ahead with a national search, we can do that,” Hedrick said. “What I’m hoping is that we get some really good candidates from Oregon. That would be my preference.” An Oregonian would already have a background of knowledge in how education is funded and delivered in the state, Hedrick explained. The district will invite folks in Sisters Country to join a committee to review applications, and there will be a community meeting sched- uled to garner input on what the public is looking for in a new superintendent. A new contract would be set to start on July 1, so the district would be look- ing to have someone hired in May. — Last Week’s Puzzle Solved — Sisters salutes... O’Brien navigated his motor lifeboat through heavy seas and displayed expert boat-handling in rescuing two of the five fisherman (the other three having been taken off by helicopter from a life raft. Keeping clear of the helicopter, debris and a rescue swimmer still in the water, O’Brien and his crew picked up the fishermen, despite the pitching and roll- ing induced by 15-foot seas, and got them safely back to Depoe Bay. • Sisters Folk Festival staff would like to thank both Cris Converse and The Roundhouse Foundation for sponsoring the Americana Song Academy for Youth. Participants, staff and volun- teers all had profound com- munity-building and musical experiences that were made possible due to Cris’s and Kathy Deggendorfer’s sup- port. To you both, thank you for inspiring and bringing youth and adults together in a safe space to create music and friendships.
