Senator Hir am Johnson, following an enthusiastic reception in Lincoln, planned today to earry his f ight against the treaty to the northwest. He leaves tat Duluth to night. He will speak there Friday night and at Minneapolis Saturday. President Wilson in attempting to " have the United States ratify the league of nations ' ' assumes to put the world in a straight jacket wherein there ean be no movement for betterment, prog ress or humanity," Johnson declared. In referring to the president's ad dress at Omaha, Johnson quoted him as eaying, in effect: ' ' ' The American people must accept the foreign document which I present to .you, without investigation, analysis, amendment or reservation.' ' ' When did the president of the Unt- tcd States possess the power to say w. its people and its congress,; 'you must t ' " Johnson asked. "When the league was discussed in Paris, Great Britain would not unlens the was given five votes and in this manner she itmendcd it. "France would not subscribe until .ho ws given an offensive and defensive al liance with the United States and tnub he amended it. "Japan declined to sign unless give Shantung with its 38,000,000 Chinese. The president yielded and thus Japan amended the league. ,. i "Just one country is denied the privi lege by Mr. Wilson of protecting itself, its treasure, its blood, its future, and tnat country is the United States. Polk Cunty Fair Shows Promise Of Breaking All r Previous Marks This Year (Capital Journal Special Service.) : Dallas, Or., , Sept. " 18. The annual Polk county fair which will be held in this city on the 9th, 10th. and 11th of next month promises to be, a record breaking show if the plans outlined by the directors carry. . At a recent meeting of the fair board that body Signed up a contract with the Brown Amusement company of Califor nia for a three days stand here during fair week. This is the first appearance of this company in this city and they ; bring a varied sort of ' amusement for both young and old. The company also has the, right for all concessions. The ' " piice paid the" amusement; cflrnpahy for their attractions during the fair is some thing like 2000. ; Josiah Will, secretary of the - fair board, has been steadily at work for the past three months gathering in grains ' and grasses for display both at the state and county fairs and his collection is by far the best ever shown here. A lively contest among the prune gTqwers is expected to take place as a valuable silver cup for the best box of prunes is being offered by a Portland firm. The- fair board is also offering . prizes of $10 and $5 for first and second ehoice. To Extent Of Thousands . Of Dollars Near Dallas (Capital Journal Special Service.) Dallas, Or., Sept.' 18. The rains "of the past week ' have damaged several thousand dollars worth of grain in this vicinity both wheat and oats. In one big field one mile south of this city, a bumper" wheat crop, the best raised on the ground which contains some 60 acres Ib practically ruined, the wheat having sprouted in the shock and in other in stances having turned black. The inability of farmers to get thresh ers has been the cause of much spoilage of their grains and the threshers in turn have been unable to secure enough harvest hands to run their machines as they should be operated. Several throsh ermen are read yio begin operations this week but are unable to gee help to run their machines, as labor is fce;irce owing t'o the prune laid hop harvest coin ing on at practically the same timo. Several Polk county farmers rouizing the inability to secure their grain thresh ed .early in the , season stacked their grain after the manner -followed by east ern farmers and so far have suffetoo no loss from the , wet ; weather. . In a number of instances wheat and oats that had been threshed were still in the field and the damage done to this grain will also amount to several thousands of dol ltrs. . : pp ' ' ' 'ROUND COAST LEAGUE BASES - By United Press.) , ; Yesterday's winners: Oakland, Los Angeles,-Salt Lake, Portland. Home runs: Brooks, MouscI, JJorton, Tigers; Johnson, Mulligan, Bees. ' May it not be said that the Oaks won, 9 to 5? Yes. The Tippers evidently have lost their "yip" and much gen eral comment is being passed on their ability to loaf. The Seals were "lingering in the past" in the sixth inning when the An gels cornered five runs and clinched the ball game; 8 to 4. There seemed to be a "moral com pulsion" to make circuit clouts in the Bee-Tiger game, five..home runs being annexed. Tlvp Bees won 14 to 7. Disregarding the "rights of con quered peoples," the Beavers won from tho Uaiuiers, 4 to l.
