Bjaeon, that good old' breaklfast
standby, is what the' people of Salem
want, judging by the orders received
today at the postoffice by those who
arc taking advantage of the govern
ment's sale of surplus army foods. It
is bacon "in 12 pound cans, at 35 cents
a pound that has becii doing the big
i business. . . . .
And then next to bacon, the eall is
Ifor sweet corn and ocas each of which
I are packed 24 cans to the case. The
corn figures by the case lot iL'.i-Klcnr-ered,
and the peas the same. This is at
tRe rate of about 11 -cents for a can
of 2V pouuds.
About 25 people took advantage of
tho government's sale today spending
on an average of about $1Q each.
According to instructions, the post-
office officials every where are not
permitted to send in orders to head
quarters in less than ease lots. While
orders will be received tor less man
a case, these orders are not sent in un
less an amount sufficient to make a
case are received. Should the orders
not equul a case, the money will later
be refunded to the purchaser.
Many families who did order today,
went in with their neighbors in order
inir ease lots, although most of those
who wanted bacon found the family
could easily get away -with a case of
12 pounds.
As orders now stand purchases may
be made through the postoffice here
until tho allotment' of Salem is sold or
until the postoffice officials in Wash
ington change their minds as to the
methods of distribution. In Portland
goveral stores have taken over the
handling of the army supply foods,
just to relieve the .post office forco.
