In the deadhjcjfvbetween tho United States Steel Corporation and the union representatives no effort will be over looked to reach a peaceful settlement. Unless Judgo Gary grants the onion committee a conference, however, the outlook today was for a strike. The letter forwarded to Gary Wedncsojij night, which gives him until August 30 to grant the union request) was written following a long conference between President Gompers and leaders of the steel men. It is nndorstood that the po sition outlined in this letter represents Gompers' position.' One labor author ity deckred today that Gary eould avert a strike by writing a letter stating that he would not interfere with the.orgas- lzation of men in the steel plants. Warren 8. Stone, head of the engi neers' brotherhood, would not venture a prediction today as. to what the re sult of the shopmen's letter will be.' He pointed out, however, that it is a broth erhood policy not to go on sympathetic strikes, and that as the enginers have no wage matters pending, this policy would bo. adhered to. Other brotherhoods, however, have wage demands now up, Or pending. Stoie pointed out that if the government should fail in its nine ty day period to lower prices, strikes would bring on more serious results than nt present, as winter will be com ing on with its attendant hardships. "It isn't a nutter on which & solu tion can be found two or three years from now," said Stone. "Something must be done immediately if men aim their families nreto be nble to live. Iu their families are to bo able to live. In are two fo three cents higher now tiian before 'the fair prico campaign' was started. , I'm afraid price wou't eouio down lunteriallv until they put some profiteers in jail.'' ' Stone with the representatives of oth er brotherhoods snd affiliated railroad organizations held a conference with Glen E. Humb last night. Stone said I the Plumb plrrn league was gaining from 2000 to 3000 new members dally. Representatives of the actors, stage hands, musicians and movie- operators were here today, and it was expected they would go before the A, P. of U executive, committee, which is now meeting. v Charge that the steel companies are diseriminatrinfr against and discharg kni union woraers in an effort to fores a strike were made in a telegram sent out by the steel men' committee to day. . . ' - ... Ther advised ' noldin? the men at work, however, until all mans of set-1 tlenieat hsd been exhausted. The tele-1 gram addressed to James Mulholtand, scretary of the Allied Iron and Steel workers- eouneil, Gary, Ind, follows: your telegram received stating that f-teel workers are being , discrimin ated against and discharged Wholesale for porpoet 'of forcing strike. -The -steol companies arc do-in? the same in many other places, but in spite of this per seeuti n try to hold the men at worn until all amicable means of settlement has been exhausted. The executive council of the American Federation of Labor is negotiating for a conference with President -'Wilson today.. The steel companies show, by their action-; de termination to .force the issue before' the president has had a chance on the merit of the controversy. We are .doing all possible to secure justice for the me and to prevent the,- national- dis aster of a general strike in the steel industry. Do not strike under any eir cumstsnces until the strike date Jias been set by your committee." The telegi-jiiii is signed, by. Jofi'n Fitz patrick, il. J-. Davis, E. J."
