C. C. Cates was coming to town yes
terday afternoon, and having four
pints and one quart of home made beer
in his possession, thought it would be
safer to got off the train at the state
industrial school for boys. Hiking it
for town, an auto passed and he was
invited to ride. It just happened that
the driver of the auto was a itate offi
cer and the drive continued until the

plant in Siilom, to cost $0945 was or
dered by telegraph this morning by the
Salem office of the Portland Kuilway
Uirht and Power company. Until the
increase in rntes had 'been granted by
tho public service commission, the com
pany did not feel justified in incurring
this additional expense. The generator
will bo placed in the gas plant at the
foot of ( lienieketa street. Jliese gener
ators consume three tons of bituminous
coal daily.

prices of from 75 cents to $1.20 a case
on Knirv soap. 60 cents a cae on Gold
Ihist, 70 cents a case on Santa Claus
soap 35 cents a case on Ivory and 4iA
cents a ease on Crystal. The hih price
of fats is given as the cause for the
sudden advance.
