Portland Built Steamer
On Maiden Trip flits Rock
Portland, Or., June 27. Running off
her course and hitting a rock, the
stenmer West Harlan was seriously
damaged this morning and instead of
starting her maiden sea voyuge, must
be brought backto Portland for re
pairs.
Leaving Portland last night with a
cargo of wheat for the Atlantic sea
board, the ship had readied a po.nt 18
miles from tho mouth of tho Columbia'
river today when the rock was Btruck.
The forepetik was badly punctured, al
lowing water to enter the vessel and
tho stearing gear was put out of com
mission. The West Harlan was luuiuhed in
Portland, May 30, by the Columbia Riv
er Shipbuilding corporation.
