At the city council session last evening Mr. Macy said that, no one volunteered to offer any evidence that the crossing wag dangerous, but that the Southern Pacific had several of ita Ibig guns on hand to prove that a Signalling device at tho corner was not necessary. Jn presenting of the case, it was stated that tha crowing at Union and Capitol street in Salem was the most dangor oug one on tho 8. P. between Ashland and Portland. Mr. Macy said that the Southern Pacific had such prestige at the state houe that the petition of the city for safety devices at the corner would probably not be granted by the pinblie service commission. Chief of Police Varney is in receipt of a letter from Paul Croncnher$;cr asking for hvlp in locating his father who is supposed to have been drowned in the Willamette May 20. Tho father, the Rev. J. Cronenberger, mysteriously disappeared at Corvnilis May 20 and has not been heard of since. His cloth ing were found on the hanks of the river, leading his friends to believe that ho had ibeen drowned while in swimming. Under ordinary eircumstnne 0 the body should come to the surface about the middle of the week, am. ne son askj tho pole and those living along the river to keep a lookout. Should anyone find a body news should bo telephoned to tho Salem lwlice head quarters. Trees and overhanging branches over the sidewalks obstructing tho way are regarded as an annoyance and theity park board ha issued an order requif ini such obstruction to be removed. According to the city ordinance, the Prk board has auiliority to compel preperty owners to keep their shade trees and porkings in condition and alw the aiithoritv to enforce the ordi nance. In ense property owners do not prKrlv trim the trees to present them from coining tinder the head of a nui sance, it in pruliable that the board will enforce the ordinance.
