A band of wandering gypsies were
given a warm welcome yesterday just
on the outskirts of town. They were
met by a welcoming committee but this
time it happened that the committee
consisted of some of the police foree.
The welcome was in the way of in
structing the gypsies to just pass on
through the city and not stop. And
that if they did stop and were found
within the city limits, they would be
arrested as vagrants. The invitation
was accepted and they passed beyond.
The experience of the city with these
fortune telling gypsiee has not been

At the last meeting of the city coun
cil, tho city fathers voted that Chief
of Police Vuriiev should dismiss one
of his men as the council thought the
city did not need tho present force
and a nextra speed cop in addition.
Now. nfter looking up the law, it has
been found out that tho chief cannot
engage men nor can he dismiss them.
That is tho special perngntive of the
council. Dr. TP. L. Vtter, chairman of
the health nnd police committee of the
Council, is of the opinion that if there
is any dismissing to be done, tho coun
cil will have to do it. Hence the mat
ter of tho police force stands just as
it is and tho police force will not be
reduced.

The little girl baby who was aban
doned Wednesday morning will be well
taken care of. Yesterday sho was
placed in charge of Mrs. llattio M.
Jackson, juvenile officer at tho court
house, who will care for tho baby while
the police are making their investiga
tions, rt is understood that a dozen
or more applications have already been
received by the police nnd the county
court, all wanting to adopt the baby.
Tt is also understood that, should there
be found no clue ns to the parents of
tho babv, a certain family which is
amply able to care for the baby will
bo permitted to legally adopt her.

A few days ago a man who was
found drowned about 13 miles north of j
the city near Wheatland, was buried i
as an unknown, as there was nothing
in his possession to give a clue as to
his name or home. There was one
thing rather out of the regular order
and that was the shoes without hens
and the special instep riveted to the
shce. Yesterday C. B. Webb of Webb
and Clough, was taking a look again
at the shoes and decided to tear out
the peculiar instep. On tho inside he
found the name Chas. Sanborn with
other information that led him to ite
lieve the man was an escnpe from the
asylum. It later developed that the
man had been an inmate of the state
institution for the past 13 years and
that anme time last summer he had
escaped from the asylum farm.

in the city, the musical program which

of the Presbyterian church on Tuesday
evening, May 13th, has bwn changed
to Monday, May 12th, at 8 o'clock in
the church auditorium. Tho program,
which is mado up of solo, quartet and
chorus numbers, will bo one of the
most attractive ever presented. Tho
choir hns been enlarged by tho addi
tion of several new voices and is be
ing carefully drilled in extra rehears
als by the chorister, Miss Miller. There
will bo no salo of tickets for the eve
ning, but a silver offering will be tak
en at the door, tho proceeds to be used
in maintaining the church music. Ev
