Wood, who recently passed away in Portland, was brought to this oity Thursday morn ing. While it may have seemed a trifle damp in Salem last January on ac count of the rainfall of 8.68 incres of precipitation, a recent report issued by the weather bureau gives the following rainfall for January: Astoria jy.db in ches, Cascade Locks 14.17 inches, xead wood 24.63 inches, Marshfield lz.tfy inches, Toledo 12.41 inches and even Albany had 10.14 inchos. And during the same month La Grande had 1.48 inches, Baker only .62 of an inch, and Pondloton 1.99 inches. o The ladies of the First M. Tho ipost office service had 90 experienced clerks at this station alone sorting mail On account of uncertain addresses, 4, 000,000 letters piled up at the dead lottor office in France. AH of these were from tho folks back home, but many of tho boys 5n moving about failed to leave forwarding addresses'. To this one fact alone, is attributed much of the trouble in the slow deliv ery of mail.
