'Meats of Quality and Flavor' report back to the unions in sympathy with the movement. "Since then there has been stationed here soldiers to the nuruoer of several hundred to maintain order, but it has not been necessary to proclaim martial law, and the city ia free from disturb ances of any kind, except of a minor character, and probably will remain so. "Much importance is placed on the vote of the engineers Saturday night. It is believed if they remain nrm the backbone of the strike will be broken. Otherwise it will be prolonged indefi nitely. "So far not a shot has been fired. There have been no street gatherings or gatherings of Eny kind, save meet ings f various organizations. The po lice, have had no trouble and it has not been nevessary so far to put on extra men. "Mining companies defend the cut in wages by citing tho cut in price of copper and by declaring there is prac tically no market for copper. "Under tho new rate, miners would receive $4.75 per day, which is 50 cents higher than tho wage uy suumg scale based on the price of copper, as an nounced by at least one copper com pany some time ago. ' ' One reason advanced for tho dissat isfaction over the wage cut is that liv i ig costs have not been reduced propor tionately. ; "In connection with this phase of the situation, it may be added that correc tive steps are being taken, both locally and by tho stato legislature. Financial Condition Good. "The r city'B financial crisis ' was brought about by the refusal of bank ing and business interests u i-nau sal ary warrants on the .ground that the city has exceeded its legs-1 imit of in debtedness. At the present time, how ever, the financial conditions of the city are better than they have been in 25 years. - , "At present only about $125,000 in warrants outstanding are carried by the banking and business interests as con trasted with as much as $950,007 m pastj years. "With the exception of warrants of i the Juno issue, which are 13 months in arrears, all city warrants bearing dato previous to July last have been called and paid. " Under present state laws practically every eity and toyn in Montana is in the sumo shape financially a-s iJutip. tho. loss from rovonuo through , saloon licenses has lessened the city's reve nues approximately $75,000 per year. "Ef torts of the municipal leaguo, on organization comprising officials of ev eiy city and town of the state, recently recommended to tho state legislature that cities be authorized to increase the tax levies for .general purposes from 10 to 15 mills. " Because of the present industrial crisis, tne order teinporoniy discharg ing firemen, policemen and other em ployes has been rescinded at the request of tho military uuthoiticB. "BankLg and business interests have refused to cash any savo firemen's war rants, feeing that tho military will do tho police work of the city." ' dIllasmws. (Capital Journal Special Service) .
