There was a time when we had regu lar tournnments; with some of the crack players of tho country engaged, and it proved a great attraction in tho club. Now that the war is over and the influenza subsided, thore is no rea son why the social life of the club should not be revived. It is almost ab surd "that such an equipment and such opportunities should not bo utilized by the inombers and the general public.'" E. T. Barnes "I have just received letters and quotations from eastern manufacturers and dealers and they give no assurance of any decline in the price of leather goods and shoes for months to como. They show that there is a real shortage of high grade leath er in the world's markets, and further that there is a scarcity of competent factory help. In the line of domestic cotton fabrics "the only tiling that shows any decline in price is certain lines of muslins, while there is an un settled condition of tho cotton market with a tendency to decline." Chief Varney "A lot of people don't seem to think there is anything serious about this matter of cutting corners with automobiles, Ibut I'm go ing to make an example of some of them and show them they are violat ing the law. It's being done here every da yand it's one of the most danger ous practices. Another thing drivers don't seem to remember is that there is a penalty for passing a standing street car on either side." Eobt Puln "I am especially in terested in the campaign for new mem bers in the Commercial club and want to see it pushed. As its president I want to see the membership brought up on a par with Eugene, where they have 600 members, with a former Sa lem man E. C. Simmons as the pres ident. They had a booster banquet there not long ago with 430 guests at the tables. This might be & good thing for Salem to put on this season. We not only want to build up the mem bership but we want to cultivate a friendly feeling among our neighbors in Dallas and other points in the val ley." Mr. Chapman, of the Commercial club -"I have sent out all the bulle tin on the Loganberry industry that I had on hand and have sent for an other lot. It is a very valuable pamph let with a lot of information about the business that should be in the hands of every man who is interested in it" Mrs. Jackson "I think there are I MCE AMIS in Ladies' Spring Suits and Coats Also New Spring Millinery New Models Arriving Every Day OUR PRICES ALWAYS THE LOWEST GALE Phone 1072 Commercial and Court Streets., Salem Formerly Chicago Store very few cases of real destitution in Salem that are not being discovered by my office, the police matron or the social center. It is very rarely that we find a case that must be turned over io the county comb for permanent assistance." Gile Merc. CO.
