PAGE THREE PORTUGAL IS STILL TRUE TO OLD ALLIANCE British - Portugese Compact Dating From Early In 14th , Century Binding Now. D 0 o v: - THE SAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL. SALEM. OREGON. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1918. . -A Sk -V IX -.1 V- . J London, Doc 10. (By mail) The eldest existing alliance in the world was demonstrated during the war on the western front : It is the British-Portuguese compact, which dates from early in the 14th cen tury. . It only, of all the scores of leagues sf nations and ententes which have hound the various parts of Europe more r less, closely, in varying combinations, has withstood the erosion of centuries and changing conditions. While the original formal protective alliance between the two countries was Bot signed until the first part of fte 14th century,: British and Portuguese troops acted together in an informal entente as early as 1148 in the expul sion of tho Moors from Portugal. A British fleet, carrying crusaders to Palestine, happened to put in at a Portuguese port whilo the king of Por tugal was trying to dislodge the Moors from Lisbon. He asked the British if they ididn't want to cooperate in the common cause against Islam. Tho en tente was successful. Had Unique Part Portugal had a rather unique part to play in the European war. When the war began in August, 1914, Portugal, true to her treaty, in quired of England what military as sistance was needed. England replied nonein France, but requested Portugal to send troops to Africa. Bo .during the 1st period of the war Portugal, toy an odd turn of interna tional law occupied the dual position of an official neutral in Europe and an official belligerent in Africa. German ships were putting in freely at the ports of Portugal, whilo in Africa Portuguese end German troops were shooting each ' other. In 1915 England asked her ancient ally for a broader activity. Portugal immediately seized all German vessels in her hailbors and began sending troops to the westorn front. This brought a declaration of war from Gormony. , . ' By placing her forces under British command Portugal was the first Euro pean nation voluntarily o- hand ovor command of her army to another na tion, and she thereby became the first practical opponent of the great con ception of allied unity of command. Portugal kept several divisions on the west front, a small navy in the Mediterranean, scattered detachments in Africa, and seamen - fighting on scores pf American.and British armed merchant ships.
