EARL RACE, Beeorder of the eity of Salf-m, Oregon, fan. 1 STATl TREASS3ER KAY MGEATES LA17 FOR EQUALIZING ME$ Legislators Wore Gvea Sug gestions At Eleetmg Yes terday Eyecssg. The Marion county delegation for the coming legislature met a few Kind friends last evening at the Hasonia Temple aad were given some sugges tions as to what would make life worth living or rather what would equalise matters in the state of Oregon. W. G. Allen, manager "of the Hunt Bros, cannery, suggested that a law should be enacted requiring tax asses sors to make a tabulated bet in each county of the acreage of each fruit tiadt berry industry. Others thought :the idea would be a good ona for other inuu9tries of the state. Then it was suggested that the dif ferent fruit industries of the state would support a law requiring uniform crates. The government now stipulates about pints and quarts but it was toot that uniform sized crates would fill the bill much better. i Dr. Hartley Spoke Dr. C. A. Hartley told the prospect ive legislators a lot about their teeth and also intimated that a law should 03 submitted to the next legislature requiring doctors to be more careful in making a diagnosis of a case and that such should be done according to modern methods. State Treasurer T. B. Kay .advocated the enactment of a law to equalize the assessing of taxes. He referred to the fact that Bheep in different counties are taxed according to the feelings or the tax assessor, low in one county and hiirh in another. Mr. Kay thought that dn assessing taxes, land and buildings got the worst of it trom tae lac tnai the assessor could make a guese at fthese properties but if an intricate piece of machinery was to oe assessea, it would be mostly guess work. Mr. Kay said that even real cash in bank and bonds were assessed diffortotly throughout the state and advocated a more uniform system or taxation. ! Cot Bsssa News J I .-. . In the suit of W. O. Unless the two Portland bootlcgg- who are serving a 50 day sentence in the Marion county iail happon to find some kind friend willing to put up the fine of 4100 each the eounty jail will have two boarders over Christmas. This morning the men were in communica tion by telephone with Portland friends in an effort to raise money to pay their fine rather than pass Christmas as a gncst of Sheriff Needham. While the mercury around Salem bat been dropping to 28 above or the pant two nights, ether points in the state have been experiencing pretty chilly weather. Sunday night tt was 25 at Med fori; 26 at Marshfield; 30 at Bosebury and only 10 above at Baker.
