Eyre, stock buyer,' says that the Portland market is glutted with hogs and there is no use shipping to Portland as it would necessitate the feeding there four days before Bale and delivery could bo mado. According to present restrictions in tho Union Stock yards, if hoes aro shipped now, it would be necessary .to feed them there four days and the regulations are that when hogs aro s0 held, they must be fed three poundB of food each day. Now it is the helping of the poor and des titute in Belgium, and other countries to which the energies of the Bed Cross will bo directed. The quota for the northwest division of the Bed Cross is 64,000 garments. Willamette chap ter hag been assigned the making of the following: 480 handkerchiefs, 290 convalescent robes, 750 pajamas, the making of undcrdrawers from 348 yards of cloth, besides a big allotment of socks and sweaters. The matcriaU for the making of this allotment are ex pected to arrive within a few days. o- Attention Elks! At the Chemawa dance given Thanks giving first prizes for the most unique costumes were won by Mrs. Glover and Miss Dale who appeared as Chinese. The contest was close between them and Mrs. C. C. Kays and Mrs. E. H, Sheely who wore elaborate clown cos tumes. The judges were so much in doubt as to who were entitled to the cash prizes that it had to be settled by the toss of a coin. As best danccrB Mrs. Walter Huffman and Harry Mill er were awarded the prizes. The drive for Bed Cross members to begin Dec. 16 and close Dec. 23. will be known as the Christmas Boll of the Bed Cross- A regular campaign will be put on for members as all present memberships expire with the close of tho year. The drive will call for only $1.00 from each person interested in tho great work that has been done by the Bed Cross. Dr. A. A. Starbuck of Dallas will have charge of the drive in Polk county. The horse was found running loose and the only thing to do was to place said animal in a feed barn and await the owner. Said owner has not up to date made any claim and in the mean time the old gray horse is costing the city about $1.00 a day for board and lodging at the Cherry City barns.
