On account of the illness of one juror
the grand jury has adjourned until next
Monday. Just at present there is con
siderable interest in the doings of thif
grand jury as it is investigating the
penitentiary parole scandal.
An injured knee is still keeping tn
the house the Eov. F. T. Porter for
mer tiastor of the First Christian
church, 'recently home from England
where he went in the war Y. M. C. A.
work. Just at present Mr. Porter is
undecided whether to take up work as
pastor of a chureh or whether to con
tinue in the Y. M- C. A. service in this
country. He expects within a week or
so to have his plans made.

No more fruit pits are needed for
the manufacture of carbon masks and
the Chemical War Service has notified
state headquarters to discontinue the
collection of pits of all kinds. While
the pits were wanted, Salem as well
as -every school district in tho country
was giving substantial aid in their col
lection. In recent letter written by Lieut.
Paul Wallace to a friend in the city,
he writes that he received the tele
gram announcing his mother's death
just two hours before his company was
to go over the top. Lieut. Wallace had
a short time before been transferred
to a company, all members of which
were total strangers. With no one to
sympathize with him, he had the two
hours to wait prat'ticully alone before
going over. It was in this advance that
he received two wounds. -
Miss Flora Case librarian of the city
library says that libraries in general
have special reading rooms not only
for children but also for intermediaries.-
As there in no special accom
modation for the intermediates in the
city library, she has worked through
the library and marked with a letter
