While the pits were wanted, Salem as well as -every school district in tho country was giving substantial aid in their col lection. In recent letter written by Lieut. Paul Wallace to a friend in the city, he writes that he received the tele gram announcing his mother's death just two hours before his company was to go over the top. Lieut. Wallace had a short time before been transferred to a company, all members of which were total strangers. With no one to sympathize with him, he had the two hours to wait prat'ticully alone before going over.
