It was Mr. Jackson's pet hobby, and his official mouthpiece shouted long and loudly. When the votes were counted, tho people, fcreathed a sigh of relief, for singlo taand Oregon citizenship wore found to have nothing in common. For a time Editor Jackson subsided. Unable to dictate the editorial policies of the newspapers of the state, and atunir to the quick at the decisive de feat of. his pet schome, he maintained an attitude of calm demeanor. Now Mr. Jackson stops up to bat again, fostering and fathering a new plan of unfathonable and inexplicable legislation. In on the scheme with Jackson is a Portland attorney, and the two have devised a plan that is unique to sav the least. Just tliw interest ol the lawyer has not been divulged. The proposed law bears the Jackson trade mark, and those who have familiarizod themselves with the measure, stato it is as full of "jokers" as some of Mr. Jackson', initio tax measures in the days of old. Jackson's scheme is to abolish tho delinquent tax law as it now stands aad substitute m its place an impractical, otlrerial scheme, cleverly framed to lure the voters, but intended a, a piece of radical and vicious legislation that will benefit the lawyers, the title grabbora, and others of their ilk at the expense of the struggling home and land owner. Such is the Jackson delinquent tax bill. There are those who intimate that Jack sou 's energy in working for the bill ii duo to tho fact that his Portland Jonr nel hn, been overlooked in the publi cation of Multnomah lists in days gone by, and that his spleen against the pres ont statute is inspired through petty jealousy in the Portlaud newspaper field. This may or may not be the case. The present tax publication law for Orogon i9 the ideal measure if public servico mar be considered the criterion. It is simple, practical and devised to protect the taxpayer from title grab bers andother vultures. Briefly it pro vides that notice be sent by the tax collector.TH ROUGH THE MAIL to ev ery delinquent taxpayer within 90 days from date of delinquency. Then, and only then, to reach those whom the mails have faired to reach, the law pro vides that publication shall be made in the newspapers. Could any plan be fairer f Could there be any better scheme to protect the unfortunate delinquent from the malicious ennning of the tax title grabber who loves to work in the dark. Now comes Mr. Jackson and the Port. land attorney and initiate a bill to ab olish the publication. It requires no par- ticular acumen to see the result, to nolo the splendid opportunity for the title grabbers and their legal ' friends to quietly "clean up" on thoae who have failed to receive notice. Theoretically thu scheme looks fine on paper. So did the single tax. So did other bits of froak legislation that have been turned down cold by thinking people. Jackson would have the tax collector send the notice through the mail AS HE XOW DOES UNDER THE PRES ENT LAW. The law makes the buiden obligatory on your part to keep him no tified of any and all changes in your address, otherwise you lose your defen se iu case of foreclosure, and cannot plead lack of notice. In other words you are left holding tho sack. To add insult to injury Jackson would make the tax collector personally liable t0 keep prop orly posted on your address. Briefly sta ted, YOU MUST KEEP the tax collec tor posted at all times or lose; if Un cle Sam ails to deliver tho notice as of ton happens, well, you lose again; .if tho tax collector fails to do his part, you loso a third time and tho poor collector loses, also. Can you beat It t NIGHT SHIFT REMOVED. V Becauaj many of the high school boys vacated their positions at the Silver Falls Timber company's mill Saturday evening, and other members of force of workers had been and will soon be called to theflcrview, tho company aban doned the night shift Saturday, and will rah only a singlo shift during the fall and wintor. Some of tho night crew have taken positions with the day force to fill the vacancies. The mill has been in operation, day and night during the summer and tht supply of lumber cut has been enor mous. They have on hand a large an ount of lumber at the present time, and will continue to run the entire winter, . if possible, with a day crew employed Silverton Tribune.
