Mrs. Bussell Catin has sent out en ap peal for women to come in and help Tuesday and Wednesday. While the response was niost gener out in the way of contributing old clothing for the Belgians, yet it seems that Salem and vicinity has not as yet given its. quota which is figured at five tons. The quota for Willamette chapter is T'j tons and it is thought that at east five tons shoud be con tributed from Sofcm ana vicinity. If any househod has been missed in the collection of clothing, it is urged that notice of this should bo telephoned to Red Cross headquarters, No. 1500. In such cases, an auto will call for the package. Besides running short on the allot ment for Salem, there is the need for workers especially those who will aid in folding the clothing for shipment. Not guilty was the verdict returned in tti3 case of the state of Oregon against Ernest Blue. For several years Blue was attorney for the city of West Salem and in the spring of 1916 left Salem going to Ketchikan, Alaska. Later the city put an expert accountant on the books and there, was found according tn his fig ures a shortage of moro than two thou sand dollars. Blue was arrested in Alaska but was out on $3000 bond. His trial last Week occupied four days of the time of the fircut court. It seems that the books of the corporation of West Salem were kept in such an unbusinesslke way dur ing those years that it was difficult tor the prosecution to fix specific in stances where Blue converted the citys 1 money to his own use. Blue made a good witness for him self, claiming that ho had not been properly credited with several amounts The prosecution based its case almost entirely on the testimony of the ex OREGON STATE FAIR NEW PAVILION Dr. Alzarcon Ira Lucas IN LECTURES 'VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE" ; and ''CHILD PSYCHOLOGY" For Children and Parents Every Day at 11 o'clock 'The Science of Life, or Man; His . Stock Supply Light Demands Moderate New York, Sept. 23. The New York-Evening- Sun financial reviftw today said: " The stock market at the opening of uie new wbok presented no tumlament- al aspect differing from that of last wecK. lhero were the samo conditions of limited supply of stocks, the float ing supply probably being the smallest in years and of but moderate demand, mainly investment. There was an undertone of strength to tho list. Standard shares were not much changed. There was a fairly good demand for the oil and motor' issues and industrials. American Sumatra Tobacco suffered setback of some two points. The rails were Ithinly dealt in, but generally went at higher prices. Reading and New Haven advanced more than a point. There was no departure in last hour from the lethargy prevailing in the earlier sessions. Prices in general ruled fractionally within the top lovel8 of the day. Bonds were fairly active and steady. While tho lieutenant has received no definite instructions as yet regarding what is to be done here in the way of baiTafc'ks, it is more than probable that the war department will find it advis able to build barracks for the 200 or moro young man who will attend the university this fall and who will reg ister witii the students' army training co;ps. Lieutenant Register has served at Fort Niagara and at Camp Kravis, near Sun Antonio. Recently ho has been sta tioned" at tho University of Arizona.
