Stole Treasurer Kay ' Has But Little FaiiJi In Irrigation Projects Slate Treasurer Kay has no faith in irrigation projects. He made fuis point dear at a meeting of the state desert land bonnl today, when he tfin a delegation of settlers from the North Unit irrigation district, in Jefferson county, that they ought to abandon their land for their own good. "Would you advise us settlers to pick up and leave f" asked Harry Card, president of the district. "Yes, I would," replied Kay, "tor your own benefit- Ijeave, you will have to soner or later anyway." But Mr. (lard and A. D. Anderson-, secretary of the district, aud othets in the delegation did not see it that way. They are enthusiastic, over plans for developing a great 200.000 acre project, by coordinating a number of projects in that section into, one great harmonious group. At the request of the delegation tan desert land board voted to join wita the district in petitionng the govern ment to invetigate the feasibility or constructing a big dam and reservoir ou the Benham Fafl site- This Tt ervoir, if feasible, will assure- watei for all the land in the 200,000acre rad ius, declared Mr. tiard. As a part of the petition to the government, the desert land board pledges the state to make an investiga tion of the seepage losses on the ( en tral Oregon irrigation project, on which an option has been taken by the North Unit district, and to investigate tae proposed readjustment of the Tumalo state project by bringing the north half into the west side unit of tne Deschutes project. In approving this petition to the government, the board went on reeora, at the suggestion of State Treasurer Kay to- the effect that its action in no way binds the state to give financial aid to the scheme, either by guaranteeing the bonds for the North Unit district, or in any other way com mitting the state to extend financial support. If the government should find the project feasible ami It should go throiiL'h on the big scale now proposed, it would involve the expenditure of m im , , 0,oot).oo0.
