RUMORS GROW FAST
MAY BE BECAUSE SOIL
AT SALEM AS IDEAL
Bevy Of Than Turned Loose
Here; Have But Little
Foundation.
Just as a sample as to how stories
can grow and how minor will nrnie
times magnify things, is the story of
the two men from Astoria who were
her to secure men to work in the
Astoria Marina works. The rumor
this morning was that every employe
of Vick Bros, had left for Astoria
on a promise of wages of $10 day.
That no one would be permitted to
buy more than five gallons of gasoline
a week. That no more pleasure cars
could tie repaired and that the garage
would not be permitted to employ
mechanics.
After considerable iuquisy the ru'
mor sifted down to the following
plain facts: two men of Vick Bros,
garage were employed by the Astoria
men and their aiav instead of being
$10 a day, will be $4.40 a day. One
other garage reported one of their men
missing this morning but didn t know
where he had gone Others said the
men had talked with the Astoria agenti
but nothing had been decided
the three representatives of gaso
line in the city have no information
limiting tho sale of gasoline and Vick
Hros. said they had received no orders
from the government to put a limit
of five gallons a week to each car
There is some truth iu the matter of
repairing cars. No garage will be per
mitted to buy steel for repair work
on pleasure car and there will be no
welding in the hop. One may buy en
tirely new parts for tho car but there
will be no rcpuiring of broken steel
parts. This taboo ou repairing refers
only to pleasure oars. tlarngcs are per
mitted tu buy steel to be used in the
repairs of trucks, tractors and farming
implements. Fred Hnnnan, gas pumper
and Tom Moisan, mechanic are tho two
men who left from Vit-k Bros.

London. Aug. 30. Rumors of an im

of a statement of general terms.
"If circumstances ever justify a
change in the existing Anglo-American
relations," he said. " President 'ilson

respective peoples to decide. There will
be no Jiploiimtic juggling and no secret
compacts will be entered into while
Wilson is president and while a demo

feel particularly thut war aims might
be left for tho peace. No allied nation
