Tone Is Strong
In Wall Street Today
New Yok, June 14. The New York
Evening Sun financial review tonight
will say:
The feature of today's market on
the New York stock exchange was the
continuation of a general tone of
strength which manifested itself in the
final hour Tuesday. Steels and cop
pers gave tho best demonstration of
sustained strength, with the rise in
oils an outstanding feature.
American Hide and Leather, Gsner-
al Electric and Baldwin scored sharp
advances. The rails were generally neg
lected. ' .
Trading quieted in the late after
noon following an advance and quick
rcacitioa in n.arine stocks. Althougn
the list closed somewhat below the best
prices of the day strength was main
tained in tho late trading and many
issues scored substantial gains over
Thursday's final. United States Steel
was above .tho low of the previous day-
Judge Lowell Will
Be Principal Speaker
The saveaker for the mass meeting to
be held at the armory Sunday after
noon, June 23, as a preliminary to tho
war savings stamps campaign to be
put on in Salom June 24 and 25 will
be Judge Stephen A. Lowell of Pendle
ton. In his letter to Dan J. Fry, chair
man of the speakers committee, ac
cepting the invitation he writes: "We
are all soldiers, behind the lines now
and soldiers are expected to obey. 1
have endeavored to find a place in
active service but whitening hairs
preclude. Therefore my time, money
and talent is ait the country's service
to maintain the morale at home."
Judge Lowell is regarded as one of the
leading lawyers of the state, and a
forceful and eloquent speaker and the
speakers committee of the war savings
stamps campaign feel very fortunate
in securing his services.
Report That California
Has Fixed Prone Price
Prune growers in the vicinity of Sa
lem are much interested in reports
coming from San Francisco that the
government had announced a maxi
mum price of 8V& cents for prunes for
tho 1918 crop. This price was set by
the growers and approved by the gov
ernment On the basi of cents for
50-60- and iO , this would figure 10
3-4 cents for 30 to 35 sizes.
Oregon growers will soon be called
on to mpet and submit a price to the
federal food administration. It is the
impression of Salem growers that the
price of 8 cents as a bams is entirely
satisfactory and that when the grow
ers are called to meet to confer with
the sate fdod administration, the mi
jorty will be willing to accept the
iprice fixed by the California men.
Mrs. Miranda McDonald has recently
purchased a well improvJl ten acre
prune orchard four miut-s soutn or c
lem, consideration $3,500. The sale wai
handled by W. H. Grabenhorst & Co.
Heavy selling the past three days of this sale has naturally broken up sizes in some lines, and reduced ::
other lines to one or two garments. These have all been placed on "SPECIAL" RACKS and given ::

WE HAVE NEVER MISLED THE PUBLIC, OR MADE INFLATED

Bargain Day "Camouflage"!
Be it known we DID NOT subscribe to a BARGAIN DAY, at this tone. Any "truthful merchant will tell you
that Merchandise is on the rise, and hard to get; in fact some lines cannot be replaced. Therefore, no merchant
who has played the game fair, protected his customers by keeping his stocks new and clean, can afford to give
those wonderful bargains that could be given a year ago. This is the truth. However, we are so situated that
we can give you "REAL BARGAINS and for this reason we are going to remodel our store, give up the second
floor and conserve our forces on the Main Floor and Annex. The war demands "Conservation on all lines; the
"Help Question is getting harder even day. and as the war progresses non-essentials will be cut down more
and more. WE ARE IN THE WAR TO WIN Anything that will help the war situation we will do: we shall close
out some of our lines at prices that are less than could be bought at the factory, that we can condense our stock,
and release all possible workers for the war.
These Stocks will be the basis of our BARGAINS for BARGAIN DAY. Our present matchless stock of Merchan
dise has advanced in Factory Cost 20 to 40 since we purchased, therefore you can appreciate what the
BIG STORE will do for its host of loval and satisfied patrons.
While we are a private enterprise we believe the public should b our confidents, hence we never hesitate to be
bluntly frank in our stand and statements.
