Amsterdam, June 12. "The crows
prince's victory in one of the era vest
defeats the entente has suffered in the
whole war," General Von Stein, Ger
man war minister, declared in the
reach st a?, according to duiatches re
ceived here today. "The French arr
beaten. Foch'a reserve army no long
er exists. The enemy has suffered
enormous losses in men and materials.
"The entente is beginning to recosr-
nio its defeat and openly admits its
troops are melting away. It seeks' to
comfort its peoples with the belief that
America's help will be systematically
prafted onto the French armies. U is
the intention thus to arouse continued
endurance.
''Americans have been thrown into
the battle in vain counter attacks.
They have suffered the same fate as
the French reserves. Other Americans
are in quiot sectors. Their strength is
far below what we were led to ex
pect. "Wo look forwaiil '. the issue with
complete confidence The army is not
yet prepared for peace. It is still a
day for the sword, which is sharp.
"It was not tho disintegration of
Russia that is responsible for the en
tente's defeat. On the contrary, it
was Russia's help which hitherto has
saved the entente."

spection of the menagerie. The
concert by the celebrated Sells
Floto circus band begins at
7-30 o'clock and the Myster
ious Widow makes her appear
ance at the same time.

o'clock tonight. Freaks and
curiosities are here.
With thoughts of elephants, camels,
lions, tigers, panthers, and other -wild
animals of tho donso forests, all the
children of the city went to bed arly
last night, aud before they awakened
this morning, theTo rolled into Salem
two long trains of heavy double
lengthed steel cars, chockful of circus
paraphenalia, carrying hundreds of cir
cus people, horses and animals. And
these trains brought tho great Sells
Floto circus, the greatest all-feature
circus in the world. i
At dawn the men were called from
their bunks, and the work of unloading
the mammoth amusement enterprise
was begun. The horses were led from
their traveling stables and were soon
pulling all the rolling stock of the cir
cus from the flats. ,
The cooking department equipment
was the first to be unloaded and the
great cook house tonts were soon
pitched on the circus lot on tho old
ball park, at the end of State street.
When the last of the wagons reached
the show grounds, several of the big
tents were up. Then scores of the
tent men went to breakfast while other
circus people were preparing for the
parade which started on time.
Four flag boarers announced the com
ing of the street pageant and they had
scarcely been seen approaching towards
the business thoroughfare, when tho
I sounds of the first circus band wore
heard. And there were three of them.
Then came the open dens with their

wild animals, which were great attrac
tions for the children, and we are all
children on citvus day. There were sev
eral cages of lions and lionesses, some
of tho most Bplendid specimens that
have ever been seen here. And there
were soveral little cub lions in the
cages with their mothers. Many of the
little children took peculiar notice of
these little animal babes, end thinking
they were kittens, of the house kind,
expressed themselves as wishing they
had the little tots to play with. Tigers,
leopards, jaguars, panthers, pumas
wero there in planty.
The herds of elephants, some of the
largest with any traveling organiza
tion, were there, end they seemed to
be on splendid termB with each other,
as they wobbled along, each having
hold of the tail of tho one in front.
The old wrinkled hippopotamus was
present taking his morning bath, not
withstanding the children along the
streets shamed him for being so ' im
modest as to bathe in front of such
large crowds. But then, Baby Hip, as
he is known by the circus folk, is only
nine years okl and he was never taught
differently, as his mama died when
he was just a little kidi trying to walk.
When the hyneys came 'long, the
circus day eight seers had a glimpse
of tho only animals of tho kind in the
world, as there ere only five of them
and Sells-Floto has them.
"The great big turkeys," (meaning
the ostriches), were also there, and so
wero the sacred oxen, tho horned horse
and tho camels.
But one of tho most pleasing fea
tures was Miss Liberty, who was cos
tumed in satin of red, white and blue.
She was seated on a beautiful white
horse, which held its position on a
specially constructed circus vehicle,
and this feature was one of the most
pleasing to the eye. And Miss Liberty
had her attendants, twelve of thorn.
Many were the hands given the pa
triotic section.
Music was found in plenty. Besides
the bands, there were three caliopcs,
and something else. That clown band
was seated atop one of the parade
wagons, end while the joey's were not
blowing out chunks of dis-cordod music
they were flirting witli our girls. But
that is natural with circus clowns, as
they are almost as big flirts as the cir
cus widow.
The parade was a splendid free
street treat, tho best that has been
seen here in many a day, and the press
agents claim that the performances are
just as pleasing. Judging from the
laughs and the hands that are being
given under the big top this after
noon by the audience, wo guess the
press agent is a truthful fellow.

Washington, June 13. Tho Midvale
Steel company will mako an extension
on its plant near Philadelphia under its
agreement to provide greatly increased
facilities of ordnance oduction. Whila
the war department will make no an
nouncement at this time it was learned
today that this is the plan instead of
selecting a new site as was done is
the case of the United States Steel com
pany ordnance plant at Neville Island
near Pittsburgh. ,
The scope of to Midvale extension Is
not revealed, bufc it is understood the
plan may bo an additional plant and
will run into hundreds of thousands of
dollars and greatly improve the ord
nance output. .
