Lodging Houses Also Will Be
Required to Me Out

An ordinance providing for the reg
ulation of hotels, rooming houses and
lodging houses in Salem and providing
penalties for the violation thereof, will
be introduced at the meeting of the
city council next Monday evening. The
request for this ordinance came to
Mayor Keyes as a government sugges
tion and is drawn largely on the lines
of the Portland; ordinance passed last
January.
Section 1 provides that everv person
who manages or operates a hotel or
rooming or lodging house in baieni snail
obtain a license to expire December 31
fo each year. The fee is $1.
The commimttee on health and police
of the city council shall examine and
investigate the character of applicants
for licenses and shall recommend
whether or not the license shall be
issued.
The person running a hotel or room
ing house must be of good moral
character and must present himself in
person to the committee on health and
police when making application for a
license.
No person to whom a license is issued
shall permit the same to be used as a
disorderly house or for other unlawful
purposes. A standard hotel register
register shall be kept in which must be
inscribed the names of all guests rent
ing or ocenpying rooms end this regis
ter must be signed by the persons oc
cupying rooms assigned.
After each name on the register
must be written tho number of the
room assigned and time when room is
rented. The register must be open to
inspection at all. times'. It shall also
be unlawful for any person to write
any other or different name than their
own.
No room shall be assigned to two
persons of the opposite sev, except in
case of children accompanied by their
parents, unless such persons are reg
istered as husband and wife.
Any person violating this ordinance,
upon conviction shall be fined not less
than $10 nor more than $100 or by im
prisonment in the city jail not to cx-

State Hotfse News
Dr. L. I. Hughes, district engineer
for the government has notified the
state highway engineers that the matter
of paving the road from Salem to Auro
ra, a distance of 18 miles would b de
cided by the officials at Washington
some time today. The state has itd

the only question being as to tha classi
fying of the road as a post road. If
this is done the work will Ue completed
this year. The state will build this road,
or its part of it with money raised
under the Bean-Barrett bill, there be

treasury, only $2,000 of it having been
used. The money raised under tho Bean-
Barrett bill can only be used in co-operation
with the government or when
the government puts up as much money
for a road improv.emnt as does the

army of 300,00 to 500,000 was promis

Fifty Airplanes Hunt
Roving Submarines
Hempstead, N.' Y., June 5. Fifty
O'rplatics started from the aviation field
here today to patrol the coast between
Coney Island and Mautaug Point in
search of submarines. During the night,
they were all equipped with machine
gun bomb dropping devices and each
curried a cargo of bombs. They flew in
fleets of eight, in V-shaped formation.
Similar flotillas put out from Bay
Shore, Icw London, Conn., and Block
Island. Ihe coast has been divided into
zones and each air fleet will operate in
its O'.vu zone.
