Since the resignation of James L. Eraden as city marshal last week this city has been without the services of a .regular police officer. Mr. Braden re signed to ' take up a position as fire warden with W. V. Fuller, supervising warden for Polk county. The Dallas council will meet next Monday tvening and a new officer will probably be el ectcd to the position at that time, ilarion Syron has taken the contract ot keeping the streets cleaned until a new officer is selected for the place. Dallas Observed Memorial Day. Memorial day was fittingly observed by almost every resident of the city yesterday and in honor of the soldiers who fought in the wars of the past and those who are at present under arms the business houses closed their doors in order to allow all help to fittingly observe the ocacsion. A program pre pared by U. 8. Grant Tost, G. A. K. of this city was held in the morning after the big parade in the Dallas armory, where one of the largest crowds ever gotten into the building assembled. Promptly at 9:30 the Dallas Home buard at the head of the paradu of G. 'A. B veterans and ladies, school ' ehildren. girls' national Honor guards and Home iiuards marched away from the High school grounds through the main streets of the city and back to the armory. A committee of old soldiers visited the graves of departed heroes in the I. 0. O. P. cemetery early this morning and decorated the graves with flowers and the American f lag. School superintendent, Fred 8. Crow ley and school supervisor, Floyd D. Moore, were in Portland Wednesday at t .-"ding the state war conference. Miss Georgia Ellis, a teacher in the Dallas public schools has. been elected to a position in the Salem schools for the coming year. D. Z. Aimer who formerly ! lived in Salem and later at Hopewell in Yamhill county has sold his property there and has with his widowed mother gone to San Francisco, Cal., starting from Sa lem Tuesday evening. It seems the Irish Sinn Feiners who are resisting conscription in Ireland are advised so to do by the local clergy. Fiery speeches are made in the churches and the spirit of rebellion thus aug mented. Such agitators should be promptly arrested and imprisoned. How the heads of the church in England view the crisis is not stated. Doubtless Great Britain will soon take a hand then something will be doing. Such a state of affairs would not be tolerated in the United States and tho Catholics here Aphis are doing considerable damage in places here in Fruitland. E. T. S. held their class day ex ercises in the school auditorium May 29th 'at 7:30. A good program was en joyed after which the young folks had a party and ice cream and wafers were served. Graduating Exercise ' at Stavton IM School (Capital Journal Special Service) Stayton, Or., June 1. The graduating exercises of the Senior class of the Stay ton High school were held in the High school auditorium Wednesday even ing. There was a packed house, a num ber being unable to get within the doors. The invocation was followed by an address by Wm, Ryan, next was a piano duet by Misses Shank and Sehuff. Melvin Nipple gave tlio class history, followed by a cornet duet by, Albert Warren and Jim Mielke. The address of the evening was by Dr. James II. Gii'iert, who discussed the "Chief Ob stacles to World Peace." He arraigned the llolienzollerns and their clique and made it plain that no world peace can be accomplished until they are deprived of their power.
