Nelson Morris, testifying before Federal Arbitrator Alschuler in tho probe of packing house wages, said he thought wages paid Morris and company employes were sufficient and that $ 1288 a year was "infinitely highor than nocessary for a family of five ten live on." A tentative budaer of living ex penses submitted by Frank P. Walsh attorney for the employes, was shown Morris. Ho declared car tare tor cnu dren going to school was unnecessary and that attendance at the theater three times a year was sufficient entertainment- Morris thought. "20 a vear each to clothe three children is too much and three pairs of shces a year each looks like ono pair too much' Fifty dollars yearly for clothes for a wile of a packing town worker is sufficient, according to Morris. Tho witness refused the federal ar bitrator a free hand in touching the minimum time guarantee plan effec tive in the Morris plants- At present a small amount of the wages is paid into a fund which provides old age pensions for the aged. Morris explained that owing to var able rocoipts, often thero is not enough work for CO hours a week, but that his company paid a minimum of 40 hcurs. Tho maximum wage is 27 2 cents per hour. Morris said he was willing to adopt an eight hour day in departments work ing 24 hours. 'The company is unwilling to in augurate the plan because dissatisfac tion would arise in other departments,' ho said. "But coming from the arbi trator, no objection wiuld be made to an eight hour day." The- living expense budget shown Morris included ono suit of clothes a year for the man, ono hat, $8 for un derwear, $0 for shirts; six tons of coal at $10; $50 a year for clothing for tho wifo; 40 cents a day for meat lor the family of five. In concluding his testimony, Morris admitted net profits for his company in 1910 totalled $3,800,000, and in 1917 $5,400,000i. Ho dtoolared pro'fit this year would bo cut more than 50 per cent and would not reach the nine per cent on the total investment allowed by tho food administration.
