gon at a personal sacrifice, instead of

able to find out. -
The day following the publication of
the Kansas offer the story was- of
ficially denied at Topeka and branded
as a hoax by Former Governor Hoch
and other members of the Kansas
board of control but neither the
Oregonian nor the Journal printed the
denial though they must have received
it through their news service. Instead,
they continually repeated the hoax,
editorially and otherwise. It was not

from all fifteen postal divisions in the
country show there is no congestion
anywhere so far. Unless the public and
merchants are holding back on us, there

accomplished, Praeger declared Amor-
'ica's postoffices have handled every
day since November 15 a volume of mail
equal to the pead load of Christmas
week last year, which was the greatest
handled by the department.
"A teleerram from the Chicago nost-
office today," said Praeger, "tells us
that on the night of December 17 be

of the United Mine Workers today ask
ed miners to forego the custnninry
week's vacation taken during the
Christmns holidays and take only two
days Christmas and New Years on ac
count of the coal shortage.
"Our patriotic duty demands that
this be done," says the appeal signed
by President Frank Hayes and other
officials. "We urge local officials and
mine committees everywhere to sea
that this rerpiest is fulfilled."
