Oregon 's colleges are not at 11 behind the rest of the state m the generous way in which appeals to thoir patriotism are being Tespondod to. The campaign was. launched in high gear last September and has been man. aged by Harold Eakin, President of the College Y. M. C. A. and Miss Fannie McKonnon, president of the Y. W. C. A., with Louis Stewart handling the funds. The averairo nledce for each student ht been about four dollars, ! , although there have 'been at least four vi iiiij uuiiatfl Bjucv nuivu is all the more remarkable since a large proportion of the students are working their way through school during odd hours. The money will be used for the sol diers exclusively. Warm, cheorily lightod, (and comfortably furnished trench reading rooms must be built where games, books, magazines and free stationery can be secured. Live lectures, entertainments, and quiet men s meetings can be put on in these dug-outs. The German method of giv ing what food and medicines there are to their own population first and doling- out the leavings to their prisoners must be remedied by sending m to the great prison-camps, foott packages containing nourishing food extracts and little lux uries, such as white bread, which are needed all the more since they are commonplaces at homo "the last evi dence "that anyone at -home cares," one prisoner said. This work Bavcs a large number of lives and prevents more cases of insanity from' hardship. Another aim of the fund is to furnish educational facilities to those who want them, It "is found that, many soldiers with a little leisure - on thoir hands, want a chance to prepare themselves for bettor paying positions when peace comes. A complete college has been formed in one camp . with professors who taught before the war, well filled classes aud ;text-books furnishJkl by the Y. M. C. A. The enthusiastic response of the University to the Y. M. C. A. appeal has produced much favorable comment. A special letter, of thanks from John H. Hudd, in charge of the Oregon cam paign, has been received. Eric Bolt, the secretary of the Army Y. M. C. A. at Vancouver barracks and a William ette alumus, accompanied a check to the fund with the Temark that " I see that 'The Old. Fight' is still coming strong." Tha 'first apportionment of five hundred was raised by vote or the Y. M, and Y. W. C. A.'s to a pledge six hundred dollars. The amount actu ally given is over double this amount or twelve hundred and two dollars. And the end is not reached yet as money and pledges are still coming in. WAR BULLETINS Paris, Nov. 28.
